A little birdy sent me an email today...

Vickie, just wanted to let you know.  Saw the BLM taking down the no camping signs east of the tracks on Tuesday.  Saw the guy again today and stopped to verify camping is now allowed there.

Just to be extra sure, I called the BLM El Centro office a couple of minutes ago and yes indeedy, one of the lawsuit closures HAS BEEN LIFTED. He said it was on their website and, well, I reminded him the website is down blink.gif

This is the 25,000 acre "no camping" closure east of the railroad tracks.

None of the "riding" closure have been lifted yet... I was told those will remain in place until the fall hearing.

Hey, I'll take those 25,000 acres, thank you very much! I know people who always camped there before the lawsuit and they'll be happy to go back "home."

wooooooo hoooooooo score one for the good guys!

No, this was the lawsuit closure that CORVA stood up to fight against, since it's a "desert tortoise" related closure. It's part of that same awful lawsuit that shut down the other 49,000 acres though.

Awesome news!! I used to camp over there, glad its back open!!!!!
karmisa
Is that a demo fee area?
APHANTOMDUCK
Without doing a bunch of research, perhaps I need to re-phrase my question.

Did the signing of the ROD of the RAMP influence this decison of BLM? I can't remember if, as part of the stipulated judgement of CBD et. al. v. BLM, that the signing of the ROD triggered this opening?

Yes icon_biggrin.gif

And Karmisa, yes to you too. There is no free camping anywhere in the ISDRA any more.

Thanks for the info Vicki.

I was wondering about this outloud because I wasn't home to get into my files, the BLM site was not open to research this, and because ORBA has the following on its site and I wasn't buying what they allude to: angryfire.gif

June, 2005

26,000 acres of California desert reopened!
By Roy Denner

During an OHV meeting with Congressman Duncan Hunter in March in Washington, DC, the Congressman asked how we might acquire more camping opportunities at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (aka: Glamis). ORBA President Denner suggested that he might help reopen the 26,000 acres closed to camping east of the dunes.

During an ISDRA TRT meeting in El Centro in June the BLM announced that the 26,000 acres previously closed to camping is now open.

Could these two events possibly be related????

Isn't that interesting. I don't know what to say. I know that those 25,000 acres were first fought for by CORVA because no other organization wanted to stand up for them since they were not related to the PMV. And I know that the same lawsuit that closed 49,000 riding acres caused the camping closures and that when the conditions of the lawsuit were fulfilled the closures would be lifted.

Who care why or how...just be happy that we have some land back. Perhaps it will help ease the over crowding in the camping areas. I know I have camped on that side many times and will be happy to go back..if the washes get to crowded...

Great news! Thanks for sharing Vicki.

Tom, I'm happy - just as you are - about this decision to open the camping areas.

I didn't make my post to pat CORVA on the back. My only point has to do with accuracy in ORBA's site posting. There is another issue ORBA has involved themselves in that has set me in motion politically and I'm keeping tabs on some of their statements due to the same.

Not too familiar with this area yet but where is the East side of the tracks in relation to the Ranger station or comp hill?

On the east side of the Railroad tracks....... beer.gif

Go east from comp hill, just past the Glamis Dunes Beach store... the other side of
the tracks by the store...... laughing.gif
The Oldtimer
My duning geezer buddies and I started camping over there in the early 80's...we partied with the riff raff that hung out at the Boardmanville store. icon_biggrin.gif

The ONLY reason we ever left that side was when they threw us out...closure!

Much less dust, NO traffic around your camp, the dogs could roam free, the Kangaroo rats intertained us at night...

Memories... beer.gif beer.gif beer.gif

Another voice heard from... Jerry Seaver with the ASA:

QUOTE
The 25,000 acres was opened when the NECO plan was implemented. That's why they are open now and the Temporary Closed areas at the ISDRA are still closed until the RAMP is implemented.

That makes much more sense. The poor guy at the BLM sounded very confused when I talked to him, confirming that the closure was lifted because of a court order but when I mentioned "management plan" he sort of faded. blink.gif

Yea Vicki, I just read the same thing on "the other" board.

Thanks for the correction and thanks to Jerry Seaver for the update.
