Ever thought about all the choppers out there running unsmogged open headder engines etc.

Ever thought about making your buggy street legal for those trips to the grocery?

Besides, turn indicators, windshield, side mirrors (are fenders really necessary) what could a brother do for a quick and simple conversion and what would you have to do at the DMV?

Could you legally drive it there to get your plate or would you have to tow it. Probably would get a ticket on the way to? If cops just let bikes rip by as specialty mfg why do they give buggies such a hard time when your just doing a test run down the block to see if your linkage works.

Sure would make looking for those slow speed bump streets and hills a bit more exciting.

Any experiences? 25bangin.gif

I showed the inspector my turning brake and said I could lock it in position if I needed to. He shrugged his shoulders and said ok. 25bangin.gif

$210 per year. icon_biggrin.gif When he asked how much I had into it, I said.... oh around 15k. He saw my receipt which was broken into pieces and saw 15k and said ok. grinpimp.gif
I got very lucky that day. Just the right people.
I stayed low, got my plate and ran like he!!. hunter.gif

I am working on it right now. My holdup now is smog ph34r.gif

The DMV (CA) gave me one of those red 4"X4" tags with a big number 9, so I am good to drive mine on the street untill the end of Sept. That is what is required to drive it on the street to the DMV to get your plate.

Fenders are required on vehicles over 1500 lbs from what I understand.

I am really looking forward to driving her on the street.

John, one of our customer, has his car street legal in CA:

he got the temp tag at the DMV but when he was driving the car to the CHP the inspecting Officer almost got a hart attack first shocker.gif whip.gif ...but John is a seasoned stunt and camera pilot/driver...so i guess the Hollywood "magic" helped him that the officer didnt give him too much trouble (btw the car has no fenders, turn signal, emergency brake,.... coocoo.gif )

But the tranny does retain the park pawl feaure in the turbo 400 correct?

I would hate to see some of these tail heavy cars on the street!

Gotta be a handful!

When I did my 914/V8, (before '89 KG), the shop near here that does exclusively Porsche body work had many 911's and 930's that had rear end damage only. I asked why, and if they'd all been rear-ended. The guy laughed and said tht they'd all been backed into guard rails by inexperienced drivers! Swapped ends under power no doubt.

yes, the "park" pin is still there (btw John has a turbo 350)

i agree with that rearengine problem 25bangin.gif tongue.gif

John loves the handling on the street. he calls the car "the cat on carpet"; very neutral and predictable (he likes to scare the local "import racers" hello.gif laughing.gif )

We've got a car on order that will be street legal. It's out about 6 months but from what i've found out it's not really a big deal.

What is required in AZ to get this done?

I am a Cali resident, but I do have an AZ address. I would mostly use it on the street when in AZ to get from the house to the dirt, or go through a drive through here and there. I may even risk it a few times by driving it in Cali. I do know that is a risk, by me being a Cali resident and driving in Cali in a AZ registered vehicle.

I have a windshield, tail and brake lights, horn, but no wiper (is that required in AZ?) I also have the Mende S-5 trans. I figured that the reverse lever would be easy to pass as the parking brake lever. It would actually work as long as the vehicle is not running.

I also need to have a VIN issued at the same time. Would it be better to VIN it as an off road vehicle in Cali first, then take it to AZ for the street plate thing, or should I just start in AZ?

I would like to get a run down from someone who has done this and also maybe a copy of the regs would be nice. I need to get this taken care of ASAP so that I can insure the car.

Thanks

Dejong Sand Cars has been making street legal cars for the past 3 years that I know of. here is a pic of him at the drive through.

Here is a link that will answer all you question. I had ours built street legal except I
for the parking brake. I am going to try to get it past with the JaMar parking brake rather than a mechanical brake. from what i here it's hit or miss on this. http://www.azleg.state.az.us/ArizonaRevisedStatutes.asp good luck an keep us posted (see title 28 transportation)

the heat is not so dry right now: T-storm is forming icon_uhoh.gif ph34r.gif

registering it street legal here in the rural AZ is VERY easy thumb.gif ...they dont care much at the local ADOT icon_biggrin.gif
its more the Officer on the street that will check on you. you stand out like a red dog; better have brake lights, turn signals and dont speed icon_uhoh.gif icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks. I think I will get this done soon. I will let you all know the outcome after I am done.

In AZ would the car have to go through emissions?

Depends on where in AZ you register it. In Pima and Maricopa counties yes you need to do an emissions test (though it's nowhere near as involved as CA's mess.)

Here in Yuma and other less populous parts of AZ we don't have emissions testing.
