Here's an idea that I don't think has been tried yet. What if you made a rectangular light housing that is as wide as the top of your buggy cage? It would have to be made out of something highly reflective. Maybe chrome plated aluminum? So my idea is, make it about 6 or so inches high, as wide as the cage (let's just say 48 inches or so), and slightly convex when looking at it from the top. Basically one huge reflector. Then install 6-8 HID bulbs (obviously with the ignitor boxes) in a line inside this huge rectangular light.
It would be expensive to try, but if done correctly it might put out a bunch of light.

It isn't that crazy if someone has an optics program to layout the lens. The hid bulbs/pack are less than $125 a piece wholesale now as well. Would look kinda futuristic. Where do you come up with this stuff?

FUNNY you should mention this.I am doing plans for exact thing on my rail.I deal with several body shops and have 6 HID setups now from wrecked BMWs(free). All are Hella ignitor/ballast single units.Power and ground into box with one big combo line out to bulb.Did mockup on board using factory round reflector lenses(factory low beam lenses, bugeye style) and strapped to rail for testing.Looked like Ghetto light bar but worked amazingly well.Am trying to mold together multiple factory driving lenses for a clean single unit look with low profile.More testing to come on correct light dispersion pattern then design of housing.I ll keep posted.

Who actually USES all six HID's that they have mounted?
Doesn't it give an effect like snow blindness?

Somebody used to make lights like that for trucks. It bolted to the rolebar. Had 6 lights pointing forward, 2 to the side and two to the back. Guess it wasn't to popular. But if done right it would look pretty cool.

Turn the lights backwards and shine them on a parabolic mirror mounted at the back of the buggy. You would be able to light up comp hill...All by yourself.

Interesting idea. You could tie the lights into the front of a roof rack. With some more work this could look pretty nice.

I think I got one of those you're talking about. mine was designed with two halogens facing forward two facing backwards one on each side facing outwards and a spinner in the middle. Only problem with it was it took a lot of juice to power the thing...
This is pretty close to it but the backside is shaped like the front.

I guess you could make it for cheaper than current HID lights, but I prefer 6 separately aimable lights.
Where you aim them is just as important as how much light you have.

That was the problem with mine is that the lights are fixed and you can't reposition them. I do have a new design for a light bar that the outer lights rotate up to 90* by turning a handle inside the car or by electric motor.
If I only had someone to fab my ideas I would be rich...

I have seven HID’s on my car and use them all at the same time. No it doesn’t cause snow blindness at all. It actually lights it up like its daytime.

I use mine all the time.. 4 on top and 4 on the front below. The more the better..
I think KG is saying ONE LENSE.. ITs basically ONE giant light - but no one makes a bulb that big - so it would require 6-8 bulbs pluged in to the back to make it work as one light..
Im thinking one of those GAS lit spot lights that do events.. Two of those on top and no one will ever look back at you again..

Things that make you go hmmmmm, I bet you could find a premade assembly that you can add the HID assemblies too. I like the idea that LD had of integrating it into a roof rack. This has me thinking now ! Thanks Doug

I think it's a good idea. If it was somewhat adjustable it would simplify wiring, mounting, and aerodynamics.
What about that idea of having the lights turn with the front wheels? A little electronic wizardry and POOF!!!

Have the mid lights turn with the wheels..
How about having body lights that face down when the suspension is fully extended lighting up your landing!!!
I think Tucker would be proud of us..

On our first buggy, ('79 - '80), we hooked up a center light to the VW steering box in the damper position to turn with the wheels. It worked well with a flood light. But at the time, I was a kid and thought it looked dorky and UN cool.
But now it would be categorized as uplevel BLING and maybe eveen INNOVATIVE. It was even a CHROME light!!
