The BLM EC office asked us to help get the word out:

attached is what the AMA signs will probably look like. ... this is what they might see out in the dunes next season.  We need all the help we can get to help protect these signs.  Fees are used to buy these. Each of the fiberglass posts is over $20 (they go out for low bid process).  The metal ones are more.

You can tell them that if these are the signs they are in for a bad season...

This is BULL... This sign screams... EFF YOU DUNES!

This is a slap in my face

And words cannot describe the complete disgust I feel when seeing this sign.

Everytime I see this sign in the dunes I will see them exactly for what they are.
Total bullcrap.

The Pastor
This suggests that they plan on having some sort of gate or "Access point". Manned?

I can barely contain my outrage about this. Did they happen to mention if they were planning on using snow fence around the entire area to keep people out? How many buggies have been allocated to "policing" this? How far will I have to ride to find an "access point"?

Oh my...
SailAway
I would really like to see the priority list for the new RAMP action items.

Out of four items that I can think of at this early hour:

Building new camping pads
Permit system for AMA
Reservation system for Road Runner
Restricting mid-week vending

One will actually reduce funding to the area (vending)... ah, but it fosters that relationship with those private business owners.

One will benefit the duning community (camping pads).

One will benefit any deals made on behalf of the duning community (AMA) and may make up for the vending $$ shortfall (there's talk of charging for the permits) but will be difficult for the duning community to respect.

And the last will definitely not benefit the duning community, but it should boost the $$ coming in (RoadRunner).

We've already been told that, like the 1987 RAMP, not all action items will completed and that some take priority over others.

Obviously, the signage for the AMA is one of the higher priorities... but what about the others?

And who decides?

Vicki

I haven't read the email from the BLM yet (they arrive at my work address, where I haven't been for four days), but it looks like the BLM is asking for our help in protecting those signs.

Where is the quid pro quo here? Where have they been in protecting our interests?

I was just wondering...

Where are the public meetings about this new process? The BLM wants our help in protecting those signs but couldn't care less about our thoughts on how to implement the system on a whole?

And then they wonder why we react with disdain?

Please.

DUNERS has been asking for input on the AMA system for three years, at every chance... info meetings, public events, emails, you name it.

One of the first things we respond with when someone asks "what can we do right now?" is "get involved in the process that we will all be forced to live with."

Instead of informing us of what will be... has anyone besides DUNERS tried to inform the community of what could be?

As I've stated many times before... I do not support the AMA concept. But I also believe, for many reasons beyond the PMV, that the AMA is something we will be forced to live with, at least in the immediate future. It is an area that was taken into account when several other species were being considered for listing under the ESA, for one thing.

But just because I don't like something doesn't mean we should leave its design in the hands of a BLM office that continues to prove they support everyone but the duning community.

This would have been a dandy way to try to get some faith back.

HAHAHAHA

I just received the answer to my question (thanks for the email icon_biggrin.gif)...

Why don't they seek public input? Because every time they've done that they've also ignored the public input, further alienating that public, and have finally decided to cut out the middle man and just do what they want with the public's land.

Silly me.

I know a snow fence is way to cost prohibative, but it sent shudders through my entire body. Just look at Pismo.

That's my whole point. There is no defined system yet.

But oh yeah baby, the signs have been ordered.

Good question, bet the UDG may have some insight thumb.gif

I do not like the signs or the AMA either and have the same concerns as VOR.

Question:
What happens if the AMA fails miserably? Will it be re-closed permanently?

What happens if it is seen as a great success? Will more land (or all) be incorporated into it or something similar?

Yeah, well, I already told you my predictions for what's really going to happen come October this year. Want to make a bet on it? Think I'm wrong? icon_wink.gif

I won't discuss it here... don't want to unfairly influence the results. But I'd be happy to take the wager on the side.

Well, those are excellent questions.

The problem is, it almost seems as if it could very well be set up to fail. But what is that failure?

The only way for it to really "fail" would be for the BLM, through monitoring, to determine that allowing just the maximum 525 into the areas is harmful to the species. That would required extensive monitoring and reporting... look where that's gotten us in the past.

But, in my opinion, even if it is "successful" and by that I mean there is sufficient monitoring to determine that the maximum number of riders haven't harmed the species, the maximum number will never be raised and the capacity limit for the AMA will never go away.

That's just not how these things work, historically.

And even if the PMV is delisted from the Federal list, since it will remain on the State list, the AMA will still require sufficient "protection," so the AMA will stand. And, don't forget the lawsuit filed by the CBD to get the Andrews Dune Scarab Beetle listed... a little critter that just LOVES the terrain held within the AMA. And the Flat-Tailed Horned Lizard and and and...

As I said in another thread, I have my own personal opinion on what we will be facing come October (if that hearing really does take place before then)... but let's presume/hope/guess that the system "they" come up with is such that the monitoring is sufficient. That means they will monitor the effect of anywhere from 0 to 525 riders per day. And let's say it's determined, through that permitting and monitoring, that only an average of 200 riders per day have gone through and the species have not been effected. Does anyone really think those signs will ever come up or that the number of allowed permits will be increased, even when we've "proven" ourselves?

We have GOT to get that Endangered Species Act under control.

Moot point. It could be years before you're one of the lucky ones that gets the privilige to be one of the 75 camps in the dunes allowed to pony up the extra $$$ for a pass in the first place...

SIGNS,SIGNS, EVERY WHERE A SIGN, BLOCKING UP THE SCENERY BREAKING MY MIND...DO THIS, DON'T DO THAT, CAN'T YOU READ THE SIGNS ?????

The Pastor
I can tell you right now what will happen when duners see those signs in the dunes...
They will be defaced, destroyed and ignored.

Already, the BLM is anticipating this and asking for the ASA's help in preventing that. They KNOW that this is a slap in our faces and expect to get slapped back.

So, they will come to the duning community and use blackmail ... "If the signs are destroyed or ignored it could get all of the dunes cloesd"... to try to convince us that it is in our best interest to protect these signs.

That sign right there is the straw that broke my friggen back...
I can tell you, or anyone who is listening right now that if you try to tell me that it is in my best interest to protect these signs I am going to meet that message with derision.

I, of course, cannot advocate the breaking of the law, but that doesn't mean I have to activly support it.
If the BLM is asking for MY help, they can ask elsewhere.

That's my opinion. No PMV was harmed in the writing.
swark
I can see it now ,,,, the access points will be placed in the area of the PMV clusters. That way riders will eventually wipe out the plants in that area and the CBD will use this to get the AMA area reclosed forever ..
