quote:Not too bad, could be there are no scientists willing to risk their reputation on something that difficult to predict but at least this guy is looking for scientifically valid information. Of course if it's an actual threat it shouldn't take a sympathetic scientist since any scientist worth the title should be able to provide valid information...could it be asking a loaded question won't get a good answer from a man of science?
I'm trying to find a map of the European coastline should sea level rise by several metres. I'm a writer, and trying to get hold of this for a forthcoming book. It doesn't have to be very great detail, and sea level rise can be any amount, just enough to significantly change the coastline. I've trawled the net back and forth with no real luck as yet.
Any ideas, links, suggestions greatly appreciated, thank you.

Not that big of a deal, seems like an honest question and I'm fairly sure it was. It's the replies that have to be read to be believed:

Wwish Icould help....I'm also a writer looking for similar information. I'm trying to find sympathetic scientists but haven't as yet got there. let you know what I find. If you ahve an answer toyour question of the map, I'd love to know too. thanks.

Gentlemen you might consider trying to get a hold of Gary Snyder, although he is not a map maker, he is an avid environmentalist. He is also a scholar and poet and has written many books and poems on the environment. He has a special interest in watersheds. Check out his books to possibly get a hold of his contact information.
Book: "Afterword: Coming into the Watershed"
Author: Snyder
Good Luck!
And finally....
quote:This thread almost seems like a microcosm of the enviro movement as a whole. On the surface it looks good and if you only stay with first impressions then it all sounds legit. But the deeper you go the weaker and weaker the arguments get and the more and more the lies come out:
Why not just draw your own? Its not like anyone checks these things out. Go for the maximum impact.
"Now, in a widening sphere of decisions, the costs of error are so exorbitant that we need to act on theory alone, which is to say on prediction alone. It follows that the reputation of scientific prediction needs to be enhanced. But that can happen, paradoxically, only if scientists disavow the certainty and precision that they normally insist on. Above all, we need to learn to act decisively to forestall predicted perils, even while knowing that they may never materialize. We must take action, in a manner of speaking, to preserve our ignorance. There are perils that we can be certain of avoiding only at the cost of never knowing with certainty that they were real."
