Ok, So I'm having a rough time getting the Pred jetted properly,
But I was jazzed to get my registration today and find Mr. Green sticker inside!!!
Not that I've ever been harrassed for having red stickers on my other bikes.... But obviously the North Star folks are concerned with the inviroment enough to produce a performance bike that meets EPA restrictions..... cool 8)

I thought only the newer 2 strokes get red stickers?? Maybe I'm mistaken. :? My sons 50 quad even got a red sticker. Those bastards! I'll let them tell him he can't ride it. 25rant.gif

Next year, you will most likely get a red sticker in the mail. All my friends on YZ426's started with green stickers and then Sacramento got wise and sent reds the following year. Most people on raptors experienced the same thing.

What's going on with your jetting? Shouldn't be too hard as thumpers aren't as finicky as two strokes.
treshombre
Well I hope not ... I was all jazzed when I saw the green sticker....
As far as jetting ....... Thats a long story .....
But basically ... The Pred works great with the stock setup...As soon as you put a less restrictive pipe on it all hell breaks loose....
The airbox does not allow enough air thru ...same as most other manufacturers but unlike other bikes you can't simply take the lid off of the pred. That coupled with a BSR vacuum type carb and its headache city... The DS650 guys know exactly what I'm talking about as they have the same setup as does many of the Suzuki bikes etc. I am continplating going to either a FCR41 (Keihen) or a TM42 Mikuni both flat sided carbs....
But I am going to try some different setups with a Dynojet jet kit and see where that gets me as well as some airbox modifications any way I'll get it sooner or later...... All part of the "Fun" I guess rollsmile.gif

I know what you mean. My daughters E/ton 40 got a red sticker too. :whatever:

Can you drill the air box or remove it all together and run a filter directly on the carb? I'm not familiar wih the pred so I don't know how feasible any of that is. Should have stuck with Yamaha and got your blaster a bigger brother, a banshee. :dozey:
treshombre
Yea , I figured something like that was coming.....
If I wanted to be part of the status quo I'd of went with the archaic
architecture of a Yamaha.

A Stock Banshee would still need to be modified and then your left with that lousy suspension built for going up and down a hill.... I prefer riding in the dunes but want something that will hold its own on the hill as well.

The reason the slip on K&N air filter will not work is that the preds airfilter and alot of bikes for that matter have a ram tunnel between the carb and the box this tunnel helps accelerate non turbulent air into the carb. Without the funnel we are seeing actually less air being driven/pulled? into the carb.

Drilling holes is most likely the way to go .... I'll know more after this weekend hopefully

The DMV explained to me that there are two letter codes in the VIN that indentify if it is a green or red sticker vehicle. I'm pretty sure they pulled something out of thier website, but I was at the counter and she may have been looking at their own system. Some people do get greens, then reds, dunno why, but the vin is the key. I'll try to find it on the DMV website.

REPLY:

I don't know of anyone of my friends that got a red sticker after a green on their Raptors from Sacramento DMV.

If the 8th digit of you VIN number is a "Y" the you qualify for a green sticker and should make an appointment and visit the DMV for the correct sticker if you got a red.

People that don't own Raptors seem to always bring up folklore that Raptors are red sticker.

Not if the 8th digit of the VIN is a Y, and this rule applies to all offroad vehicles.

The story got started when Berts imported some Quads, mostly Raptors, but some 400ex's from an out of state, bankrupt Honda/Yamaha dealer.
These units only didn't have the eighth digit "Y" and are red sticker.

Berts sold 14 of them total. You can call Ron Seidner the owner of Berts personally and he'll tell you the same thing.

And occasionally DMV accidently sends out reds by mistake,, easily remedied by making a visit with your registration.

I'll wager any amount of money up front cash with anyone who can prove me wrong.

Well, I don't want to bet, I just want to resolve the issue. The DMV told me it could be one of two letters. The only common letter I have on my green sticker vehicles, and I have ten of them (not including the buggy), is that the 5th digit is an E.

I have heard too many stories about the red/green sticker issue to have it limited to one dealer, some of the stories came from people that bought them from Chapparel in San Berdo. I do know that many of the dealers imported them from Canada, but the DMV website indicates that green sticker vehicles comply with CA emission standards, and red stickers don't, but they don't give the key to the vin #s.

ok, the predator is a green sticker bike, so is the raptor, as long as its a ca model. some of your buddies that are getting red stickers for raptors are getting them because they are units that were originally made for the other 49 states. how dealers here end up with them is they buy up the stock from a dealer in other states that are going under, or over stocked, etc. that is why you see a raptor with a red sticker.

also tres. they make a k&n filter for the predator, as well as an outerware, also biggun has a complete exhaust system with new header and all. white bros wont be putting out any pipes for it( about a year im told) since they have an agreement with polaris to produce the pipe for them, but the other aftermarket companies are already making stuff for the predator. Daryl Rath racing has some stuff for them as well as seen in the last issue of dirt wheels.
Fireballsocal
Sounds like your right Kevin, I seem to remember those raptor guys finding out that each of them had bikes that were bought from a dealer that had gone under in a different state.

What I want to know is what has to be done to make it Ca. CARB legal? The big XR's have all kinds of stuff on em that you can rip off but I haven't seen smog canisters on raptors. Maybe the snorkel on the preditor?
Kevin
typically, for emissions, the ignitions are different for ca, the idle rpm is considered emissions, and the choke too. most bikes have some sort of pcv system to vent crankcase vapors. i know for example the 400ex has 2 differnet igniton modules, a 49 state, and ca. after looking over the predators airbox, there are definatly some gains to be had by modifying the airbox as the intake snoprkel is very small. one option which wouldnt cost much, if you dont care to have a air box at all, is to get some silicon hose and some tubing and make a short extension so you can put a clamp on k&n on it, kinda like the kits for banshees to eliminate that airbox. heck, i might even make my own airbox for it out of aluminum that will also house the battery.

you could use Coors light cans which would match nicely with the Predator color scheme. :dis:

nah, to flimsy, but what if you dont have a silver predator, huh?

Hey people I was wondering then since I got a green sticker on my Predator does that mean i'll get a red next time? Or is there not a chance of me getting one? Does anyone know for sure.
Manuel Raptor
Hey, Tres i have green stickers on both of my Raptors, but when I got my bikes I did notice that other Raptors had a tag saying that those bikes had red sticker registration

Well I guess if you had the Troy Lee edition you'd have to use a buttwiper beer can icon_devil.gif

I ordered an airbox mod kit and K&N filter from Rath Racing in Minnesota this week for my Predator. (320) 234-7223 Rath has supposedly done dino test with the back of the airbox cut out with a gortex cover he sends you in the kit, along with several different jets and a different taper needle with instructions. He instalalled an E-series slip on from Polaris and a K&N filter. It is supposed to add 10 horsepower and take out all the guess work and dinging around you would have to do to do it from scratch.
