I found a trans I might buy but want to make sure the gearing will be alright. This is primarily a desert bug so wide open desert and some hill climbing. The engine is a 2.5 suby no turbo. The trans is an 002, I'm not an animal so this box will work alright for me.

4.57 R&P
3.55 1st
2.38 2nd
1.84 3rd
1.43 4th

Are these too close to low or alright? I could get the 4th changed out.

That 4th gear is pretty low, for desert I would stick with 1.00 or 1.13. That 1.43 will wind out pretty quick at about 50 mph unless you have some very tall tires.

That 3rd is REALLY close. It'll climb! Might be a little noisy at high speeds, lotsa RPM

What size tires are you planning on? You'll want biggins'

Here are some #'s to think of:
35" Tires.
3rd gear @ 45mph = 3600rpm
4th gear @ 60mph = 3700rpm
4th geat @ 100mph = 6200rpm

With 33's
3rd gear @ 45mph = 3850rpm
4th gear @ 60mph = 4000rpm
4th geat @ 100mph = 6650rpm

I'm running 33in super diggers. He said they could swap out the 4th, maybe 3rd too. If a 1.13 were swapped in would that put it too far away from 3rd.

The subie will pull some good revs so I wouldn't go too tall.

My gearing is almost exactly that (3rd is 1.75 though) and with 33s it screams a little on the pavement. 60mph in 4th is comfortable but it seems like I'm winging it if I keep it at 60 for 30min or so. Eeeeeee icon_biggrin.gif It'll pull 100mph but 6200rpm is quite a scream...

I'd ask you how fast you normally drive. If you are going to be on smooth roads for hours, go with a 1.20 or less 4th. If you don't get above 60 very often, those gears are fine.

In the sand, you'll want all the gear you can get in a Baja. That 1.84 3rd would allow you to dune it in 3rd.

Finally found a ratio calculator. 3rd 1.75 4th 1.3 or 1.65, 1.2 seems good. A little bit taller.
