Full Version: Which Rear Coilovers

We took the new buggy out for it's maiden voyage this past weekend and it became painfully (literally) obvious that the marvin shaw's were not going to cut it. We bolted up a set of cheap coilovers which barely go us through the weekend. So now we are in the market for some real shocks. I think that the 2.0 Fox 5" Coilover Emulsion shocks would work perfect, but they are $235 each. Is there an alternative to these shocks which would put a smaller dent in the budget, yet provide the same level of performance? My buddy mentioned that he had a set of Aldan coilovers which were significantly less expensive on his old mid-engine, but the only info I have been able to find on Aldan's is for street rods or drag racing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Here is a picture of the car, other than the shock issue this car was an absolute blast!!!!!

Thanks,

Derek

QA1 from summit, if you only need a 5" shock will work, the cheap ones start at $140, then a $35 spring gets you sprung, $200 gets an externally adjustable, also the fox airshock is twenty times better than marvin shaws, $225, no springs to buy.

Do yourself a favor and spend the money on the Fox`s! You can alway`s Valve them the way you want and get part`s easily! The other brands mentioned are for street races and drag car`s!

At one time my frame was the same as your frame the Fox shocks are the best shock I have used, I've tried Aldan's, Koni, Marvin Shaw, Fox's has been the best ride only one thing the uper mount has to be widen the fox shocks are bigger don't know about your lower mount can't see it, yes the Fox shocks are $$$$ $235.00 for the shock but worth it you forgot the spring about $ 50.00

You can send them to Marvin Shaw and have them converted to coil overs for around $250.00.

I did the Fox 2.0 coilover swap from the Marvin shocks last year. All I can say is wow what a difference. The only thing you may want to look at it the 5" part. I think when I did mine I went to a 8.5" even with the swing axle. I had to put new top mounts on but it was well worth it.

Radflo also offers a air shock whick would work well I would also take old skools advise and step up to a 8.5" stroke we did a set up like yours and it worked really well with the air shock not alot of chatter at low speed due to the fact that is doesnt have a spring.... icon_smile.gif

I knew that the consensus would be that the Foxs are the best, but I am looking for some low cost alternatives. Those of you that have used Aldans, which buggy shops carry them, so I can get a price quote? Also I am considering getting my Marvin Shaws converted to Coilovers, has anyone done this and how did they work for you. The marvin shaw air shocks did not even move, I mean we went on a dune ride and the shocks only moved 3/4" total. I would hate to spend $250 to have them converted to coilovers only to have the same result. I want a shock that has 5"-6" of travel, and will use all 5"-6" on a hard dune ride.

Thanks,

Derek

if you ordered a pair today unlike fox we could build you a custom 5" or 6" stroke 2.0 air for $230 a piece they would be sent off to plating wednesday with other parts its about a 2 week turn around and it will use all the travel! call Glenn for more info 714-965-7828

Okay so if I decide to go with the Fox Coilovers what will I need to do in the way of valving them. Is there a tried and true setup for this car, as it seems to be very popular? Now when you guys say you went with an 8.5" travel shock, did you have to relocate the top shock mount or just make it wider to accomodate the 1.25" wide Fox shock. Do you have any pics of this setup? I am just trying to make an informed choice!!!

Thanks,

Derek

These are the 5" travel shocks, they are 16" long, used 10" spring 325 pound they are the wright lenght, you have to make the mounts wider, it rides great icon_biggrin.gif
