I would suggest that if you are buying a used motor, private party or wrecking yard, that you pass on any motor that has broken timing gear covers. Buying a used motor is a crap shoot. Unless you have mechanical skills to rebuild a motor, I would stick with a purchase from Outback, Crawford Performance or C&G.

I have a 2005 3.0 6cyl subie, has less than 1000 miles, looks brand spankin new. John at Outback is making 450hp @10psi boost using these motors. Will sell for $1850

I should have added some clarification.

I have a 2.2L that I think has a bad crank bearing. I understand it is more expensive to rebuild the engine than replace it with a used one. I am happy with the power output in stock form, it's in a 2-seat Sand Limo Coupe.

I don't want to spend $5000 for an engine that will break my Type-2 transmission. I would rather spend $800 and go to the dunes.

I'm sure the engines from Outback and Crawford are awesome and worth every penny. This is my first sandrail and I don't need 450hp.

If you've installed one of these used engines in your car, I would like to hear your experience.

Thanks for the replies.

I bought my 2.0 turbo motor from a guy out of Colorado off of ebay. I don't have specifics today, but it is going on three years. About $1000 delivered to my door in Phoenix.

Is it a turbo 2.2 originally?

Try ORBS in Yuma. Last time I was there in March, he said he had a garage full of Subies.

I am not familiar with what Quirt @ Crawford Performance or C&G has to offer in used engines. (complete motors and / or long blocks) However I do know that Outback sells tested used motors. If you already have a Subaru that has transferable parts, there is no need to spend 5K. Give the Subaru builders a call first and see what they have available if you can do your own exchange.

If you are buying from a wrecking yard or private party I would recommend avoiding a motor that came out of a car with front end damage.

Balistic Motors in orange specializes in subaru's also. I do know they have some 2.0 and 2.5 tested jdm's over there ready to go.
Their # is 714-532-0177

Thanks, I wrote down some numbers. I'll give them a call.

You can't replace that motor for less than the rebuild. Bearings, seals, etc will run you ~$400.

A used 2.0 will run you $650. Then you need all the parts. Your 2.2 exhaust won't fit. Either will the intake plumbing. I won't price out every part, but I'd plan on at least $1000 w/o computer to swap from at 2.2 to a 2.0.

Give me a PM if you want more details.

I bought a 1999 SOHC 2.5L Subie from CNS in Santa Ana, ran it a couple years, worked perfect, still runs great. I put another $400 into the motor for gaskets, belt, belt pulley bearings, and belt covers. I upgraded to a closed deck motor, so I'm selling the CNS motor for $2200, but it has lot of aftermarket stuff included that you likely don't need, such as the trans adapter, flywheel, VW style clutch disk, polished intake manifold (outback), cut oil pan with AN fitting for turbo oil return (outback), and custom oil filler (outback). I also have the map for a link computer to run 10lbs of boost. Motor offer does not include fuel pump, computer, air filter, exhaust or turbo. CNS is a good source.

i think he just wants to replace his 2.2 with another 2.2.

i also would talk to one of the mentioned builders, if they don't have anything in stock they may be the best source for where to go. also keep in mind that if you start a relationship with them, if and when you decide to build that thing or need parts, you know who to go to.

i have heard that alot of the parts off a 2.2 will bolt on to a 2.5
GoatPoker
My bad, I was assuming if he was going with a JDM motor it was going to be a 2.0.

You could try local salvage companies. The 2.2 is also domestic so there should be a few around. I used Southwest Japanese Engines for one of my 2.5s. The guy was pretty reasonable, I bet he'll match any price and he's local... no shipping.

I bought a used 2.2 from Nippon for $800. They have a lot of them.
