Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone here has had their flywheel lightened? What exactly does it do and does it make it more ridable in the dunes?
I have a 400ex, bored to a 416, 11:1 comp, top end cam, port and polish and I mix VP110 with 91 gas @ 50/50. Anyone with experience can explain the pros and cons of this? Punchier, more power up top, down low, all around....no benefit
Thanks,
SS

There is less mass to start spinning so if you were looking to accelerate at the fastest possible speed from a dead stop, lightenin the flywheel would be an option for you. I don't recommend this for anything besides drag bikes.
The weight of the flywheel stores energy. As your tires grip a little more over a bump or you go up a slight hill, the flywheel will give that energy back in the form of inertia. It also helps smooth out the power pulses of the engine. Without that extra inertia, your bike would have less traction, less control, but would accelerate faster.
Bottom line, leave as is in my opinion. I will be adding weight to mine on the 500 by adding a lighting coil which should make a big difference in traction in the slippery stuff.

There is rumors of stalling problems. It works great for banshees because of the twin cylinders. People will mention a stalling problem with single cylinder engines though, but a banshee fires every 180 degrees so the said problem doesnt exist there. Ive only experienced it myself on my banshee, it is very quick into the powerband with my lightened flywheel. Not much help I know, but im sure your 400ex will accelerate faster with one, not to be confused with a HP gain though.
