Full Version: Yuma Duners - New site and next diner

First off I keep forgetting to mention this but Glenn and I started a new site to help organize south dune visitors: www.YumaDuners.com

While we are primarialy a loose group of Yuma locals who enjoy the south dunes we also want to focus on raising awareness of the south dune areas (Buttercup and Gordon's) as well as helping people with questions about those areas.

This is more or less an off-shoot of the Yuma Duner Diners and is a very loose knit group at this time. Please stop by and say hi on our site even if you can't make it to a diner or dune event icon_smile.gif

Ok - now on to new business. The next Yuma Duner Diner will be held Tuesday March 11th to keep with our new second tuesday last friday schedule. It will be at Famous Sams for trivia night again so it's a good idea to get there early to grab a seat before they're all gone. Trivia starts at 7 but I'll try to be there around 6:30 to claim a table.

The official announcement and discussion about this diner can be found here:

I'll be in Yuma this saturday evening. Visiting friends for a week, but I am bringing a couple quads. Is there some place in town I can get some paddle tire (like Haulers, Edges, or Sand Skate II's). I'll bring some 10" rims for my new Predator and would like to get some paddles on them before we head out to Glamis. Don't have time to order any before we leave. Also, where can a guy get a good map of Glamis that shows how to get to some of the more popular southern riding sites from Yuma as well as some of the amenities.

Thanks!
LoBuck
Sorry I didn't make it to Yuma Duner Diner tonight, feeling a bit under the weather today. Jeez, now I've missed 3 in a row!

Desert Rat - There are basically 3 ways to get to the South Dunes areas from Yuma. I'll give you the 2 easiest and most popular.

1. Head west on I-8 for about 20 minutes to the Gray's Well exit. You can't miss it, cause its right in the dunes. From there, a paved road will take you to plenty of camp spots, the first being the Buttercup campground. At the stop sign turn left and follow the paved road and camp anywhere in that area. There are pit toilets there also. Straight over the dunes directly south is Butercup Valley and Comp Hill. You can also continue straight on the paved road at the stop sign to Midway campground (more pit toilets as well) or keep going to the Old Plank Road camp area (still more pit toilets).

There are all kind some cool bowls and hills in the Buttercup area.

2. Go past (west) Gray's Well exit about 5 miles to Gordon's Well exit. At the stop sign at the frontage raod, you can go left (west) to Pair-A-Dice which is a restaurant/bar type place. A right turn will take you east, follow the frontage road and cross the bride at the canals. Once across you can camp anywhere in that area called Dune Buggy Flats. Head east into the dunes and to Patton valley and you can follow the canal east to get to Test Hill. (No toilets)

Have fun!

Man, Glenn you missed out. We won the basket of fries in round two even though technically I was the only "Duner" there. My mom and GF rocked at Trivia and Matt showed up after Round 3 but no one else made it icon_sad.gif

As for finding paddles in Yuma. There are a couple of places to check.

ORBS - On Hwy 95/16th St just east of town.
KD Cycle - Just west of ORBS
Wild West Motorsports - Just east of ORBS on the north side of the street.
Liberty Motorsports - On the east side of Arizona Ave south of 16th st/Hwy95.

(the road I'm referencing off of is called 16th st. in town but is also known as Hwy 95 since it keeps going in both directions south to Mexico North to....Vegas I think? Parker and Qartzite atleast...)

Jason you werent alone I was their. I looked for the glamis dunes logo and asked the waitresses if she knew if any of you were there. She said who are they? Since I never meet any of you before I didnt know what the h-ll you looked like. Maybe that is a good thing I didnt find you come to think of it. Well I had a pretty good dinner anyway.

My brain was still thinking about going at 7:00pm, but everything else said NO! icon_twisted.gif Hey you got it right, winning the fries early is the way to go, eh?
jhitesma
Doh sorry we missed you MPR. We were sitting right next to the door/pool area. Were you the person sitting by themselves next to the team with the birthday party? He looked kind of lost when he came in and I almost went over to ask if he was looking for us....I'm not not that outgoing unfortunatly icon_sad.gif

Glenn has brought a checkered flag before to mark us and I usually wear a dune shirt of somekind but Glenn didn't make it and I didn't do laundry so we were kind of hard to find.

Didn't you hear them calling out the scores for "Duners"?

Damn, and we threw out most of the fries we won too because we had already eaten dinner!

I had a blue shirt on and I sat by the bar for a while but maybe I will meet you guys next time.

Glad to have ya Joe! Hopefully you'll get to make it to a diner some night. I'm thinking we may have to do a Buttercup BBQ for the final friday this month. I won't have a motor for my rail icon_sad.gif but the dunes are hard to resist while the weather is still nice!
LoBuck
Thanks Joe! Jason's done most of it, I'm mainly giving moral support

I agree that Buttercup BBQ will probably be the best location. I'm trying to arrange my schedule to here for this one.

Ok, sounds good enough for me....Next Duner Diner is set for the last friday of March (3/28) at Buttercup 7PM AZ time.
