Dunes likely to shrink

David Freitas

San Luis Obispo, CA, March 7 - The California Coastal Commission has recommended closing another half-mile of beach at the Oceano dunes.

The commission made the recommendation during its meeting in San Luis Obispo on Friday. The concern is the endangered snowy plover.
Science shows the birds aren't breeding well. But, survival rates are improving. The parks department and Friends of the Oceano Dunes say no changes need to be made.

"Over half the park is closed to vehicles," said Ruth Coleman, Director of California State Parks. "This park has historically been shrunk down and so, we feel there is an adequate balance and it's a very important place for people to recreate."
Sierra Club members disagree.
"If they're going to limit access at Morro strand to people and horses and people with dogs," said Tarren Collins, Sierra Club. "If you can put your dog in your truck and drive him on western snowy plover habitat in Oceano. That shows they're not being consistent and what she's saying is not true."
The parks department does not have to follow the Coastal Commission recommendation. But the director says it's likely they will close the half-mile of beach down.

Sounds familar. Half is already closed to OHV's. Then another G.A.G. comes along and song and dances their way in. We need to help the dry mud loving tree slug, and we only want half, thats fair. After all, that still leaves half open to OHV use. Funny how the G.A.G.s never mention that first half closed to the public, and on and on it goes!!! :x icon_cry.gif 25rant.gif  icon_sad.gif
