What do most people change around for the dunes?
Do they Drop one and go to 13 tooth or up one to 15?
How big of a difference does the one tooth make?
Chummin
depends on the Quad.
My Z400 would not dune solid in 3rd gear. Was constantly going from 2 to 3.. got old..
I dropped one in front and added 2 to the back.. Now its perfect!

Dropping one tooth to the front is like adding 3.5 teeth to the back and will gear the bike lower.
The reverse is true for adding a tooth to the front. would be like subtracting 3.5 teeth from the back.

i have a 03 LE Banshee and i pretty sure im good on the top end so i wanted more bottom end dropping to a 13 tooth would be the way to go wouldn't it?
Chummin
Sure. Dropping one will help you off the line BUT you will lose some top end. Its all balance. What you gain on the bottom you lose on the top.

One thing is for sure, you'll get through those gears faster than before!!

I have an '01 banshee and just recently dropped a tooth on my front sprocket. The difference in the dunes is incredible! I don't have to shift as much, and the power is always right there when I need it. If you are looking to make your bike better for duning, I would definitely recommend it!

See i keep hearing different things my friend when up to a 15 tooth sprocket and he says he feels more bottom end?
he has a banshee also.

Just like Carrie said, dropping 1 tooth in front is the magic touch. My 97 wouldn't pull 6th gear and at the hill, fourth was too high and third was too low. I can run 6th gear now and pull fourth up Olds with the smaller gear. Your friend might notice that his bike pulls longer in each gear with one extra tooth but is imagining the increase in bottom end. 6th will be completely useless in the sand with that gearing. For a $12 gear, its a great mod.
Pheinx
yeah i thinking of going with the 13 tooth then..
i dunno for sure i might head out there this weekend just to see how im running, my quad wasnt running good at all the last time we went
but its running great right now so i wanna see how it does before i change the gearing.

icon_twisted.gif AHHHHH THE TRICKY QUESTION OF WHAT IS THE RIGHT GEAR RATIO FOR YOU AND YOUR QUAD. I COMPLETLY CHANGED MY GEAR RATIO, WENT FROM A 14/42 TO A 15/45. IT'S STILL A 3 TO 1 RATIO, BUT! IT WILL REACT DIFFERENTLY THAN SAY 16/48 EVEN THOUGH 16/48 IS STILL 3 TO 1. ALSO THE SIZE OF YOUR TIRES WILL PLAY A FACTOR IN YOUR GEAR RATIO. ARE YOU CONFUSED YET? THOUGHT SO icon_biggrin.gif FOR MY BANSHEE 15/45 WORKS WELL. IT HAS ENOUGH BOTTOM END AND STILL HAS TONS OF TOP END. LOOK INTO IT SOME MORE BEFORE CHANGING SOMETHING. IT WILL BENEFIT YOU.
