I just got some really sombering news. One of the guys that goes out to the desert with us just had a heart attack and passed away. His name is Rich Carter or more affectionetly known as "Shrek" to us. He was a really good person to be around and just a mountain of a man. He leaves behind his lovely wife and alot of friends who will deeply miss him.
RIP my brutha

Thanks guys, came as a total shock. He was only 32 & in good health minus a couple of shoulder surgeries recently and then one neck surgery from damge done during the shoulder surgeries. Totally blown away. Sucks losing one of your own, not somebody older or expected or whatever. My instant responce is "you've got to be shittin me. No fck'n way, no way". Him and his wife were out the desert with us for New years. He was leaving as I was hungover and I didn't get to say a real goodbye, and now he's truely gone. Fck'n sucks!

To his wife:
I know how it feels to lose a spouse at a young age, I lost mine when she was 28. I know it's tough and painfull now, but time will heal your wound. It will be a rough road but things will get better, they did for me. Be strong and surround yourself with family & friends, It really does help. Good luck and remember, life can and will go on.

I too am very upset with his sudden passing. He was a friend of mine and a fellow officer on my department.
Sometimes I just dont understand why god chooses to take some people. This guy didnt have a mean bone in his body. He was a mountain of a man and in great shape, minus his recent shoulder and neck injuries. Shrek was probably one of the strongest men I have ever seen in my life.
Shrek, I love ya brother! Rest in peace.

I spoke to Motormonkey (Shreks best friend) this morning and he said that she is doing OK considering what has happened. We are going to try to make it over there today, but also don't wanna be a burden with all the other people that are going to be coming and going. Right now we are just waiting to hear from Motormonkey on more info.

Welcome HV.... Sad times. In the past 10 days or so there have been three of these off duty heart attack deaths in the local SD LEO community. None 32 years of age though and that really makes a person think. I've been trying to figure out if Ive crossed pathes with Rich or not.

He truly was a mountain of a man, and the best friend you could ever ask for. And in spite of his intimidating size, my little girl loved to grab his finger and drag him around restaurants saying, "Shek, Shek, Shek!"
