I am going to paint my Rhino myself and am just curious what I should use to prep it. I know that there are adhesion promoters for plastics but have heard that the painters are just using a self etching primer. Anyone out there know the scoop?

I like to use plastic prep. then hit it with a da sander with 220. coat it with a good 2k primer then wet sand by hand with 600. next wash it with HOT soapy water (dawn dish soap) and a grey scotch pad. dry it compressed air then tack rag it . now your ready for base coat. I like to tack rag it after base coat, before the clear. then for a slick job,let your clear sit a day or two then wet sand it with 600 and re-clear it while over reducing your clear by 20-30% but what the eff do I know 1dude.gif

Yeah, it doesn't sound like you now anything icon_biggrin.gif

When you say plastic prep, do you mean an adhesion promoter? I found some at Temecula Valley Paint that says it is for plastic bumpers. The directions say to spray a few coat of the promoter, wet over wet, than lay down your first coat within 5 min.

Thanks for the info,

Matt

Hey fucno4life, would you use a "flex agent" or something like that in there? I honestly don't know $h!t, but that was I heard about painting plastic bumpers or even the plastics on my old banshee.

plastic prep just realy cleans off any mold relase that might be on the plastic. you could use a bonding clear ( adheasion promoter) under the primer but I don't. now I have just plastic preped then sand with a grey scotch pad, then adheasion promoter, then paint with a dark color, but the green on a rhino is VERY hard to cover with anything but black ,so I like the first suggestion. and I would'nt do grafixs without preping the first way. I hear the some painters get away with it but I have shitty luck so it has never worked for me. after you paint your first job you will know why we painters charge so much laughing.gif

I have painted a few times and you are very right, I realized very quickly why paint jobs cost what they do. I have painted Three dune buggies and a quad, and each time I think I have it wired, some other curve-ball is thrown at me. It seams to me that you learn something new each time.

Here is a picture of my first paint job.

The biggest thing I learned on this one is make sure the panel is not upside down when shading the flames coocoo.gif coocoo.gif That lesson took a bit of work to fix.
