Greetings All! I can't believe I didn't find this forum sooner--Great group!

I've never been to Glamis or Buttercup but will be meeting my brother off the 8 in Buttercup next weekend. We both pull our toys (16-18' trailers, 4k-7k pounds) with 4x2 pickups and were wondering what the terrain was like around the camp areas and if we will have any trouble tooling around. The only reason I ask is the last time I was in the sand (Pismo Beach) I got stuck. I've since learned a little about tire pressure and traction and figured that there are people like myself who do it all the time. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. icon_smile.gif

There are good places to park and camp at both glamis and buttercup without a 4x4 however if you take it in the sand.
1 air down the tires
2 never stop on a incline
3 plan ahead when driving

Buttercup is a great place to camp if you're afraid of getting stuck. One of my friends tows his dual axle trailer out with a 2WD Toyota and I've seen him get stuck 2 feet from the pavement at Glamis.

At buttercup the main campground is almost all hard pack. The north side between the road and the highway is probably your best bet - it's more solid there. The eastern edge of the Cul-De-Sac and the southern side are softer and much easier to get stuck in.

Is there a place in close proximity to air back up???

I believe glamis has air at the store. At buttercup there's a gas station about 7 miles east and you can fill up there.

An alternate path to PAD (and probably safe than the Hwy if you're on aired down tires) is to just follow the access road on the south side of the freeway to the west. Once you go past the Midway campground the pavement ends but just keep following it westwards since it's well traveled by the Border Patrol.

You'll end up at the new bridge across the canal which you can take directly to PAD and avoid the high speed driving on low tires.
