Full Version: Buying A Baja Bug For 'parts To Put On A Frame'

(and for the title)

It sounds like a good idea to me. I don't really want a Baja Bug, I'd only want the parts. That pushes me toward the cheaper, beat up bugs. Thesamba has classifieds, checking them every day shows that a good bug in good condition with performance parts and bodywork goes for low to medium four figures, with exceptional examples (or overpriced, I wouldn't know) in the very low fives. Some rarer ads show a bug without a lot of money in it going for the 500s-600s, sometimes with an engine, sometimes without. These ones (I hate that phrase. "these ones." it doesn't make SENSE if you think about it!) have the basics, ratty seat (check) steering wheel (check) wheels and sometimes fat offroad tires (check)... but would the VW suspension stuff even go on the rail? I'd hate to limit myself by specifically getting a frame model that accomodates the VW gear only to have to replace the tabs and mounting points later. It's already becoming obvious that SOMETHING is going to need heavy modification because the available Chenowth models (the 2LW frame isn't even on their site anymore) have a foot shorter wheelbase than 'kosher' FAVs.

The more I look and study, the idea of saving and hustling rapidly for the frame *first* and then adding components bit by bit grows on me. Sure, I don't have unlimited finances, but I *know* that no matter what, it'll get done. The problem is picking the best plan of attack. pirate.gif

Why not buy a good frame that you'd like to take your time and build up with all the right parts, and then find a cheap rail that has the motor and trans that you'd like. Drive the rail around while you collect parts...

When you hve enough, swap from one frame to the other...

My Dad has a VW with a 2332 and 091, that I think moore racing put together when Moore still owned the place and boxed trailing arms that must have been the first ever....heavy, but they won't bend..dual rear shock mounts, a custom 20 gallon aluminum tank that fits behind the rear seat...

I nice older baja...I had fun driving it in HS, but still other than the motor, trans and fuel tank, nothing would swap over easy....I suppose you could use the beam, and the trailing arms, but I think for just a little extra money you can get way better parts..off the shelf: 3x3 trailing arms 3-10" ovcer beam, better shocks...

I had a baja and went about doing the same thing. Went out and bought a frame a nd planned to swap over every possable thing from it....

In the end I ended up using the steering wheel, wheels & tires, motor and trans and thats it.

That concept, while great, is a bit "Old School".

Yes most of us old guys have done that.. I've done it several times..

But the title is issued to the VIN on the baja (VW) frame not you.. or your new buggy frame..

You may wish to buy a "Salvage" LSx style car and a frame..

But, don't dispair.. The Baja idea is valid for a starter rail..

(Or a wrecked standard VW) Super Beetles don't have beam axles.. icon_biggrin.gif

I'm a bit too far away for that. icon_wink.gif

Thinking locally, it might be a good way to get the some basic parts all at once, but maybe not the way to start out immediately.

Looks like the first purchase will be the frame, hopefully this spring. Thanks, guys.
