Just a few questions.

its a lifestyle documentary DVD on the Imerial Sand Dunes. Which will be made for TV. The DVDs will be distruibuted through Best Buy, Target and Walmart. We want to show the progression of the Sand Dunes. How they were and how they are now. It will be a "Warrn Miller" style video with lots of interviews and lots of riding. It is purely entertainment.

Thank you.
So it's not a television show
per se, it sounds like and I'm glad it will be entertaining.
But some of the other questions didn't get answered yet and I have a couple more...
Who is sponsoring it?
What does it promote?
Who is narrating?
Is it politically motivated?
and
Who profits from this DVD?
Who is providing the interviews?

And, may I ask:
Is this a "Spec" project, of fully funded? If yes, by who?
Have you signed the distribution agreements with the named outlets?
Or their suppliers? Or mainline distribution channel?
Who is doing any scripting/screenplay writeup, and is it avaiable?
Any agendas we may want to hear about? Pro? Con? Enviro?
Awaiting your response..

Oh now, that's not anywhere near 300 questions.
What they lack in quantity they make up for in quality.

The reason for all the questions is this community has been burned by "then and now" feature films before.
And, well, this is a very poltically and marketing-savvy group.
Nothing wrong with asking the questions and hey, it could mean a boatload of drivers for your DVD.

Sponsors are yet to be determined.
It is privately funded.
Distrbution is in place.
I am scripting it. and doing the interviews.
The main agenda is to show the "stoke" on the Dunes. And what it is that makes you come back.
It is 100% pro Sand Dunes.
Through interviews and ride-alongs with veteran “duners,” this video will
take you into the heart of the dunes. It will show you scenes in the middle of
the desert that a fast growing subculture calls paradise. You will hear riders
talking about respect for the dunes and you learn how to read the dunes. We
will show some excellent dune riding footage and show the “stoke” that makes
everyone come back.

why the DVD thing? do we really need more publicity on Glamis? why the hell put it out in target and walmart? means more idiots who have ZERO driving experience can go down and finance everything they need (including a rail that goes 100+) to go to Glamis and kill someone. growing up it didnt get any better than going to Glamis, now days i dont even want my 8 year old nephew to ride out there on a saturday for fear of being run the eff* over by these dumb sh|ts that dont know what the hell they are doing. There's the cynicism I was just about to warn you of.
I'm sure you are certain it's going to be an excellent video with great footage and the duning community will come away smelling better than ever before.
But the questions posed to you come from too many years of broken promises and uncertain projects and there is a cynicism in our community that may be voiced to you very quickly... has, in fact, already.
I will say this... on Saturday DUNERS had 24 of the best drivers and buggies come out to help with an event our organization staged so I know there are "givers" in this community.
But probably not without direct answers to those questions. Experience has made us all skeptics.

As much as I want the dunes to stay less crowded it is impossible to keep it on the "down low". The word is out and it is like telling people don't tell people LA has great weather and such. People are going to go and it will grow whether youl like it or not. Just a fact. I don't really like the facts eaither, but true. As long as the movie is tasteful and Pro dune I'll be in it. Oh, I wouldn't call anyone "haters" just "cautious."
I personally, and DUNERS as an organization, have always believed that a positive expose on the dunes would be good... maybe even counteract all the negative publicity. The "downfall" (if you could call it that) would be that more people would be attracted to Glamis.
If that's what this turns out to be, you'll have an unbelievable first sale day.

But I'm getting a feeling there's more to this... maybe my woman's intuition is just working overtime?
A couple questions not answered yet...
Is this piece politically motivated?
Who profits from this DVD?
Who is providing the interviews? (you are doing the interviewing of _____?)
And a new one for the drivers who are considering helping...
Will there be any assurance that the editing won't change the "feel" or intent of the taped riding? Again this is from a previous burn to our community, so please try to understand. We'd like to avoid a taped dune run that is spliced to look, or uses a voice over that states, something illegal or irresponsible took place.
Thanks for your patience. The GlamisDunes community consists of more than just those who post and/or read here, so you could end up with an abundance of drivers for your taping.

Vicki

Feb 13 2006, 08:57 PM
The piece is not politically motivated. It is just a documentary that will capture the essence of the dunes. The camping, riding, drags, BBQin...The scenery, the comparison to a beautiful ski resort with endless fields of powder that you get to up hill just as fast as down. The feeling you get hauling a** around a big bowl and transitioning to the next. The pure joy that makes you come back time and time again.
Who profits from the DVD? If we break even on it then it is a success. If we lose money on it it is still a success, documenting something that I am passionate about is something that I will always be able to show to my kids. If you love your job...you will never have to work again. If we make money then I guess the profit will go towards the next one.
I will be asking the questions during the interviews. these questions will be directed towards you, me, your neighbor, your friends the duner that can't wait to go for their next ride. We just want to get many different perspectives about the dunes from many different duners.
About the only thing that will change the "feel" of the ride in the edit is the narration stating how much sand you eat. While most people are eating their breakfast the duner is taking a sand shower and practically gargling sand for breakfast...and loving every minute of it.
I understand your concerns and respect that this community of people don't want the integrity of the dunes to be jeopardized.
Sorry for the long reply but just wanted to make sure I answered your questions…

CRForever03, we will meet up with you on Friday. We were planning a ride to Glamis via Sand Highway. Might be a good place to get footage of how people can get from Gordon's to Glamis. It's a pretty good ride and takes about 30 minutes (depending on your speed).
From what I have heard this sounds like a good thing and hopefully will provide entertainment to most as well as a good representation of what the dunes are all about.
Are you planning to get most of your footage over the weekend or are you planning multiple visits to get more?

I still don't see the answer to a hugely burning question about this...
Are any enviro's involved in this in ANY way and is there any way they might be able to use this planned film against us?
I'd also be concerned that there would be none of the "girls gone wild/party til you drop" planned as that's crap only shows 1% of glamis, and misses out on the other good 99% of it.
I think (personal opinion) that a lot more info needs to be put out about this before the community should embrace this idea. I honestly applaud and support something that shows duning as it is, not some hyped up propaganda for either the enviros, or soft-porn distributors.
And I'd absolutely make sure you had your "red tape" taken care of with the BLM. I'm sure there are going to be more of them out there this weekend, and they tend to be less tolerant on the big weekends.

I agree 110%!!!!! Do we really need more publicity good or bad. Glamis has already been overpopulated with people who just heard about this new sport called "OFF-ROADING". Do we really need more people running to the dealership and buying a new quad and toyhauler only to find out that they never even been to Glamis. I rarely if at all let my 6 year old out of the boundries of our camp. (he has been riding since the age of three). He has more duning experience than most of the newbies crowding are already small riding area. Making and selling a dune video is not going to make hoards of new duners... That's pure nonsense. The people that will be buying this type of video are for the most part the people that already go to the dunes and just wanna see more of what they already do. If you want to be pissed about over crowding, get pissed at the known enemy <(the greenies) and fight back. The next thing you hear is people wanting to stop the "Sand Sport Super Show" because to many people will be able to see and buy buggies.
If we lose the dunes, it will not be because somebody made a dune video and sold it to the general public. It will be because we didn't fight for what we now have and fight to get back what we already lost.

So I showed up at 10 am at gordons...I ended up parking next to the guy who owned the production company that was filming that day...He seemed to be a pretty nice guy and explained to me that ESPN2 and someother station? were interested in a film such as this...One thing that was odd is that he had no idea what glamis dunes.com was, and explained that the person on here CRforever, must have been one of his employees or something. There was a guy on a CR that came and talked to me though, maybe that was him?
Anyway, so we went up into the dunes and they set up a few cameras and filmed about 5 buggies going around a few dunes. Curious to see if it gets finished and shows up on TV someday...
