You can head out of Temecula on the 79 I believe to Ocotillo Wells. I can't remember the other hwy to turn on. I think it's S2. I'm sure someone else will chime in with the turns. I just drive and don't look at the hwy #'s

79 out of Temecula left on S2 then left on 78 and a right on the 86 I believe

79 South... Take it all the way thru Warner Springs.
Just after Warner Springs, 1 or 2 miles, hook a left on the S2
Take that to the end. (T intersection at the 78)
Turn left there.
Take 78 East to another T intersection. Make a right.
This will be the 86S/78E
Continue on thru Westmoreland, thru Brawley all the way to G!

Keep an eye on the S2 turn. Sneaks up on you. If you miss it, you'll have to go the horible Julian road. I believe it says San Felipe rd.

We usually take the freeway around on the way out but come home through the mountains. (a little easier on heavy loads) It's a little longer but from Murrieta, not by much. Here's complete directions just in case they don't know where to go once they get to the 86...

If your friend needs to take freeways instead of a winding, 2 lane road, here's the way we go....

Winchester Road (79) to Domenigoni Pkwy, right, then at
1st signal, Warren Road, left then immediate right to Warren.
Follow til dead-end at Ramona Expressway, right.
Next signal, 79/Sanderson, left, which takes you through Lambs Cyn to I-10 in Beaumont
Head east on I-10 to 86S, exit to Brawley/El Centro
86 merges with 78 north of Westmorland.
Continue on 78 through Brawley. Watch the signs to turn left to stay on 78 towards Palo Verde.
Follow to dunes, just before railroad tracks, make right and follow until you are in wash 13.5!

this is the way I go from Murrieta also, the back way thru Warner springs is 25 minutes faster but it can be white knuckle at times, much easier to leave 25 minutes sooner and use the cruise controll on the freeway. But the back way is a very nice/scenic drive, if I were in a truck/trailer I would go the back way for sure but not worth the effort and wear/tear on the rig for 25 minutes saved.
