I'm almost ashamed to say I don't know. I have asked many people over the years, and I can't say I have ever found the true answers. Competition Hill is pretty easy to figure out... it's where people had hill climbing competitions. I've heard a couple different stories for Olds. One is that an Oldsmobile powered buggy was the first to make it to the top. I kind of doubt that is true, but it could be. The other story is that an Oldsmobile powered buggy was the fastest guy on that hill and thus the name. Another version of that story is that several Olds powered buggies all conquered the hill. I have no idea if any of these stories are true, just relating what I have heard. The rest of them... Brawley Slide, Lizard Hill, China Wall, The Wall, and The Ceiling, I imagine were just named for the sake of naming them, but WHO named them I have no idea.
LoBuck
Doug, you may be right on with the Olds powered Buggies. When I was a kid (in about 67or 68) my neighbor use to build sand buggies out of cars in his carport. He cut the body off (all except the firewall and the roof), shortened the frame, cut the wheels in half and welded 4' steel bands to make 10' wheels. Most of the cars I remember him cutting up were the Olds 88 or Buick Roadmasters. They had the biggest motors because they were big cars. As I recall, one of them had a straight 8 cylinder. I bet my parents have a picture somewhere.

When I was a kid the rumor was that a drunk drove off the highway and managed to actually drive his Oldmobile to the hill {OLDS} before he got stuck. Ive heard this from different people over the years. Is it true???

HMMM, great question SAL, Slap be stumped...BUT, Slap's gonna do some diggin and see what he can come up with...
Looney Duner
Looney Duner will work on this one too Slap, maybe we can get this one for Sal. The Olds story about an Oldsmobile being the first to make it up the hill, I'm betting this one is true. In the old days all everyone drove was V-8 WATERPUMPERS, as LoBuck said there were alot of people who used to run basically stripped down street vehicles with big tires.
We'll find out the reason for the naming of a few of the hills, I'm sure icon_biggrin.gif

I named them all :dis: For the right price I'll share my stories.
Slappy
Thanks a bunch Looney. With your Mother G experience and connections, ain't no doubt we gonna get some of them.

Stories that I've heard,
Olds was named because there was a junked out Olds sitting at the bottom of the hill for a long time.

I also had the chance to speak with one oldtimer while sitting at Olds hill. He was sitting in an old time water pumper buggy. He proceded to tell me the story of how HIS car, the one he was sitting in, was the car that Olds hill was named after.
Whether true or not, it certainly made for an interesting conversation!

As far as naming things at Glamis, It's a fairly straightforward process.
We have acually succeded in naming a spot at Glamis called
"Speedy Corner"

I prefer to call that hill between Brawley Slide and China Wall..

"OH $H1T Hill"..

cause when heading towards China Wall from Brawley you come over the lip of it and everyone one is yelling "OH $hit" as then go down the face.. icon_biggrin.gif :cheese:

Banshe bob made a comment a few months back in regards to some of the GPS coordinates on some of the maps. Specifically he said that the company making the map (the Trax map that's been posted many places with GPS coords on it) worked with him for getting coordinates to places in the dunes. And that the names on that map are just the names his group used which he's surprised to see have become more and more accepted now and that even some of the BLM maps now use some of those names.

Then again I may have been dreaming part of that...who knows icon_wink.gif

GLAMIS

castle and village in the council area and historic county of Angus, eastern Scotland. The present castle, a fine example of Scottish Baronial architecture, dates from the late 17th century, though the site is believed to have been occupied since the 11th century, when the Scottish monarch Macbeth was thane (ruler) of Glamis. In 1372 the castle became the seat of the earls of Strathmore. …

(glämz) , village, Angus, E Scotland. King Malcolm II died (1034) nearby, and a sculptured cross in the village is known as King Malcolm's Gravestone. Macbeth was thane of Glamis, and the castle, seat of the earl of Strathmore, is erroneously claimed to be the scene of Duncan's murder in Shakespeare's play.
