I run the Sand tires unlimited 16.50x15 paddles and I love them but I want to change my wheels to the 17" and STU does not make the 16.50 for the 17" wheel, I have tried the 17" wheel with the STU 33 sand blasters II but I did not like them as much as my 16.50's. I see that Extreme makes the 16.50 x 17 35" paddle, I know extreme had some problems in the past with the paddles holding up, just looking for somebody who has may run both (STU & Extreme) and what you thought about both tires. 5-6 years ago my car came with the Extreme paddles and I did not know good/better/worst but I had the chance to run the STU 33 for a day on the car and there was such a huge difference in the way the car ran/handled, I was sold on STU from that day on, just wondering if Extreme has improved their product.

thanks for any info.

From what I understand they did have issues a few years back with paddles ripping off.

Apparently they've made changes and they are holding up well now. I've got a set and they're doing just fine.

hey Pat,

How about trying the 35.5x17 stu's?
GlamisSpider
Doesn't stu make a 17 in Sand Master Paddle?
I don't think the profile is as flat as the 16.50, but you probably could go to a wider rim?

I would stay away from Extream..... 2 trips tore the centers out of all the paddles... And that was in the sand... Now i have STU & all is well... 4 trips with no problems... Wasted $800.00 on those POS tires Tried to get some $ back, they told me it was my own fault, how can it be my fault for running the tire in the sand, thought thats what they were made for.. I will NEVER run those tires again.

About 10 trips on my Extremes, and no problems or issues with wear. icon_smile.gif

My car came from Tatum with Extremes on it. This is my second season with them and I have noticed the center is trying to come out of them.

I had the same issue. STAY AWAY FROM EXTREME TIRE CO. The centers in mine lasted 1 hour of duning. I was still breaking in the motor. First they said I did not break them in properly blink.gif then they changed their story and said I was abusing them in the hard pack which is absolute bull. angryfire.gif The first trip was the beginning of the season. So they are still having issues.

I'd sincerely appreciate it if you could run a set of these. laughing.gif

I heard the problem is when they pull them out of the mold..... dont know if this it true or not, but apperently if you dont let the tire cool down to proper temp, it does not cure causing the tire to be inconsistant throughout the paddles.. has anyone ever heard of this before? Too soft?

Everybody Knows Extreme had a bad run on there tires ! It's been said over and over , but the ones on my rail and many others that were produced after the bad run have lasted very well!

And how long was this run? I have read all the way back 2-3 years they have had this issue. The paddles on my car were new in October 2005 and they fell apart. From what it looks like it is a roll of the dice wether or not they will last. And I got a bad roll.

Stay away from Extreme tires!... I've seen them leak air through the sidewalls and they are much harder that STU.

And just curious, why don'y you like the STU 33-17 sand blasters II ?

They did not seem to float or hook up near as good as the 16.50's, when I was running at speed there was not a big difference but starting from a dead stop the 33's would sink quite abit before I could get on top of the sand, also when running at a decent 2nd gear cruising speed with the 16.50 I could stab the throttle if a small lip or rise came up and get the front end up, with the 33's I would get too much tire spin, I see that STU has a 33 sand blaster and a 33 sand master, what is the difference? Whice tire out there comes close to matching a 16.50 foot print but is 35" tall on the 17" wheel, that is the tire I am looking for.

OK... I must be the only guy that likes a little tire spin. I have the 33/15 now and will be going to the STU 33-17 sand blasters II next season. I know they have a "little" more aggressive paddle than the 15" version... but that is not the reason I will be switching... I have to replace my rims anyway so I thought I'd go with the 17" rim for the looks. ph34r.gif They just have to last one more trip and I'm done for the season...

Looks like you need to call Joe at Fullerton Sand Tire.
I would say go with the 17 Sand Master with a wider rim (15 instead of 12)
duneflyer
this is the reason that got me started on the whole mess, so while I was replacing the rims I thought I would check into what tires are available.

what is the difference between the sand master and the sand blaster tires?

The Sand Master Has a more aggressive paddle, but needs a lot of horsepower,

If you like the 16.50 you might see if a standard 17in Sand Master Paddle on a 15 inch wide rim would flatten the profile of your tires, to give you more float.

But, I would definately give Joe a call, he has helped a few times and sure knows is stuff, you can find his add in sand sports mag. (714)484-5996.

Thanks, I will continue my home work, the offset of the rim is a concern also, I have the minimum offset now, I think 1.5" and most of the wheels that are out there have the 3" offset which puts me very close to hitting my coil over, it would work but real close, also I want to keep the car as wide as possible on the rear so the bigger offset may make the car a couple inches narrower, I dont know what the min. offset is on the 15" wide wheel but I will find out as I start to shop around.

Size matters and 2 inches on TOP makes a lot of difference. Ask any woman icon_smile.gif

The way your car handles will change dramatically. Going to 35s will take away some HP and gearing will change. They also are tougher on your trans. If you got the ponies and your trans is geared right , this could be a good choice.

You might want to see if any of your buddies will let you swap tires for a run in the dunes while you all are out there just to try before you buy. After all, you aren't asking to borrow his car, just the meats...
