Should a engine be mounted solid or not.
I was surfing a tranny builder's website (Street cars, obviously different) and he says no transmissions should be mounted solidly to the chasis.
He declares that all trannys are not designed to be a stressed member of the chassis?
I am sure about 99.5 percent of the guys have it solid mounted.
I have even seen Subaru's not even using engine mounts?
I would think that solid or not, the Front and Rear of both the tranny and engine should be mounted in some manner?
Most cars I see have a single engine mount that attaches about midship to the engine, which has to cause stress on the tranny?
What do the big dollar race teams do?

VW engines do not require engine mounts due to the small weight factor, anything else i would recommend having engine mounts. I've got a Honda 3.0L and it's a semi light weight engine but have two engine mounts for it, one on each side holding from the bottom. We also solid mounted the Trans in the front (091) If the trans wasn't solid mounted, if it did move the nose cone could break off.

Most race teams use a mid motor plate. It is a aluminum plate that bolts the the back of the block and bolts to the frame. they also make front motor plates. check out the chasis shop catolog, page 22 and on.

That's cool.
I think revenge has a good idea, support the engine properly and you are able to remove the tranny without removing the engine.

an unsupported VW in a rear engine lt rail can be trouble....we cracked two 091 bell housings before finally putting in a solid mount for the engine...

lantz, what type of eng are you running, and any quess on the weight of it. Were you jumping it to break it. I am running an aluminum v8 to my trans and was considering adding rear eng mounts

How did you support the vw since they never came with motor mounts originally?
