I've been waiting a while to weigh in on this debate. First of all let me start off by saying my thoughts and prayers go out to the soldiers and their families who have given the ultimate sacrifice. I have enjoyed reading all of the opinions of so many of the people on this board.
Class 8, while I disagree with your stance as well as your motive for that stance on this subject. The links you have posted have provided for some interesting reading material. There are several reasons that we are involved in this conflict. The importance of each these reasons, we are only left to speculate about. First and foremost I believe is National security. Some might say our national security was never threatened. Before 9/11 Terrorist attacks of that magnitude, were found only in Hollywood scripts. An Arab Nation whose leader is a murderer of his own people, and has shown to have little regard for human life. In this post 9/11 world, a man like this with his history, and close proximity to those who are already plotting to harm us, cannot be allowed to rule and have control over weapons of mass destruction (chemical, biological, nuclear or dirty). The people of Iraq live under a murderous tyrannical dictator. The injustices that have taken place in that country against it's own people are absolutely gut wrenching. I have read many accounts of it and am convinced that many more have gone undocumented for fear that Saddam might come and kill them and their family even after they have been here in the states. The United States has always stood as a beacon of freedom and liberty for the world. Never before have we stood by for very long and let such things happen. No need to start now. Lastly and equally as important as the previous two, Oil. That's right oil. To say that this war isn't at all about oil would be foolish. At the same time to say that this war is to gain control over oil for the personal gain of a few families is a statement worthy of a visit from the whitecaots. Class 8 and Blu, The United States that we live in is considered to be the last remaining Super Power. A living breathing entity whose heart is capitalism and the blood it pumps is oil. Without this precious blood, it would suffer Heart failure and Stroke. Get it!! To Clarify, this war is partly about our
oil interests in the Persian gulf. To allow a potential enemy/aggressor nation control over one of the largest natural oil reserves in the world is geopolitical suicide. In other words we might as well draw a warm bath sit in it and slit our wrists. (That's just an Analogy, not literally people) Class 8 the links to the information you have posted do not show a bush family oil conspiracy. They show a country protecting it's oil interests, and for good reason. On a side note, in the last link you posted the essay on Iraqi sanctions. Exactly half of those dates occurred during a democratic administration. Presidents such as Truman, Kennedy, Johnson and Carter. But I suppose they wanted to dominate the Iraqi oil fields so that Bush and his oil buddies could get rich right!
