Just curious as to how many of you visit the cinders OHV area in Flagstaff during the off season for Glamis?
King Tim
i do as often as i can, maybe 5 or 6 times each year . it's always a big vote for us on easter my sons and i vote the dunes and the girls vote cinders even though there is an equal amount of us the girls say there vote counts twice. the boys and i are beginning to ? this alleged rule . wife.gif tim

i'll going up that hill on my DS650! long, soft and kinda steep. we go there about 4-7 times during the off season. i love it there, i like G a lot better but it is great there in the summer. i dont see many LT rails there. honestly i can only think of 2, and one had a VW. i dont see why more people dont bring them out there. i am hoping to see a rail out there this year, its a 1500HP LT. the company is in Flagstaff and they test in the Cinders. but it is a lot of fun there! great hill climbing! i cant wait to go back! went once this winter and it was REALLY cold, but it was for school! icon_biggrin.gif 1dude.gif

Alpha tests there.
duneatic
thats it, Alpha. i want to see one of there cars.
Nawty Dawg
Alpha bought in Wizards School Of Fab, from what I hear........I have seen the car they call "Stealth", parked but have never seen it run. I doubt if you'll ever see it at the hills. If that car is going to be anywhere it will be in the dry lake bed. I would also like to see this car in action. 1dude.gif

Usually go to the cinders a couple times a year. With the rail now not to sure. The cinders tear things up pretty good. It's awesome up there but when I'm there I'm always thinking of the dunes. It's like a teaser..
tomfish1
They are a blast. Went last year with the bikes and golf cart. Probably not the car.
GLAMISCOYOTE
There is a big group of us that go and I have been taking my car for the last three years. I do not have any chips from the cinders that I have found since I have had it powdercoated. Here is a pic from a while back, because I do not have my most recent ones at work.

Great place to go in the summer. thumb.gif
GETBENTAZ.COM
Get Bent does 90% of all R&D there. hopefully it rains a little more so that they stay open all summer long, very nice place. icon_biggrin.gif

yea it is big enough for a three day camp . it is way worth going even from california , might not be something you want to do every month but you will like it . the hills there make olds or comp look small . $ 100.00 hill actually is too steep for a lot of stock quads . buggies with less than 200hp rarely make it up . when you say water i guess you mean lake etc. and no the closest lake is 25 miles or so tim flag.gif

In the summer, we go to Kennedy Meadows (Sierras) accasonally, 6 hrs. ride from So Cal. How long does it take to get to the cinders?
duneatic
from phoenix it is about 2 hours for us, and about 4.5 hours to get to G. my DS650 barely gets 50ft up $100. i've seen only a few lucky VW's make it up. the hills are the funnest part!!!! i love climbing hills out there. the size of olds is a smaller hill out there. the hills are soft and steep. dirt bikes w/a paddle have to down shift going up $100, thats how steep and soft it is. well worth the trip!
The Rooster
The Cinders eat up horsepower like nothing else!

First, the cinders are hollow and weigh about half what sand weighs for the same volume (this makes your paddle tires only about half as effective as they are with sand). Second, there is no air up here! Up at 7,000 feet elevation, your motor is not making the HP it is at Glamis. Third, the cinders can 'stack' much taller than sand and that makes for one hell of a LARGE, STEEP mountain!

The cinders are also very sharp and abrasive compared to sand. I have seen several 250cc bikes chew up a brand new rear paddle tire in two days. The cinders are also a bit dirty. At times it feels like you are walking through your campfire pit.

Good times when it's too hot for the dunes.
MWBbanshee
The Cinders are 15 min outside Flagstaff. There is a gas station right outside maybe 1/4 mile away where you can get water. With the town so close it makes it nice you can run into town for dinner or drinks. Also Sunset Crater is right there also some lava tubes/caves to go explore plus miles of forest roads on the other side of the highway.
duneatic
^^^^^^the lava tubes and lava flows was really cool. if you have kids they will probably enjoy seeing them. now i really want to go to the cinders!!!!!!
GLAMISCOYOTE
Here are a couple more recent pictures from last season.

where do you guys camp? i havent seen any nice rails there in a long time. when do you guys usually go? i can guess july 4th is a trip, since there are a lot of people there then. we usually camp just off FR 9148N. they stopped mining over there so we started to camp there again.
GLAMISCOYOTE
We usually go on the 4th of July and sometimes Memorial day and Labor day. We go in from the Sunset crater side and then turn in and go up the road just about 100 yards on the left.
duneatic
o ok, so you go in on the other side, not off the 89. well maybe i'll see you out there on the 4th.
duneatic
oh, i'm curious as to how the rails do in the MASSIVE whoops out there. like behind $100 by the power lines. there are huge whoops out there in some places and i have been wondering if the LT rail can blast through them like a G.
