As some people have mentioned in other threads, we have a few projects going on in the shop right now and I will try to get some updates to you guys over the next few days. This is a CORR Pro 2 truck that will be run half of this season and all of the following season. For those who aren't familiar with CORR, it is a man made, outdoor, large stadium style, side by side, off road race format that is carried on TV by Speedvision and has recently been purchased by the Baldwin family who has made their mark in SCORE for may years. More races have been added to the schedule like San Diego and soon some in Las Vegas and Phoenix. Anyway, there are three popular classes covered consistantly by Speedvision, Pro light (mini truck basicaly) Pro 2 (full size two wheel drive) and Pro 4 ( full size 4 wheel drive). We are building a Pro 2. CORR mandates most of the chassis when it comes to frame rails, suspension pivot points (front and rear) as well as motor placement, width, height and cubic inch to weight limits. Most people run 400-430 cu caburated motors and trucks in the 4000-4300lb range since a 10lb per cubic inch rule in in effect. CORR penalizes you with weight for things like fuel injection, overhead cam and building a chassis that is not their standardized print so no one does these things any more since the weight is a lot.
Ok, on to our truck. Since there is a big demand for trucks in this sport right now with TV covering the event and sponsor money hanging out there, we decided to invest into the program. Our truck has been computer drawn in Solid Works and the fixturing has been computer drawn as well and then laser cut for maximum precision. As you will see in the pictures, the fixture is a work of art with dowl pinned locators for all suspension pick up points as well as the mandated rectangle frame rails. The table has been laser etched with two center lines and full ruler measurements down all edges of the table. Everything unbolts for easy removal and is modular for easy welding on the bench instead of welding uncomfortably on a complete and bulky chassis. As I said, all pick up points have required possitions and we will be able to keep these points with thousanth of an inch accuracy. Some of the things that CORR lets you run with are the arms and spindles so we had our own wheels built with big time strength but more importantly, an offset that will allow us to run an inclination angle and overall spindle design that will help with turnability in the truck. We have 5 orders for the basic chassis already and repeatability and quality is paramount.
Some of the other pics here are of the parts that are going into the truck we are completing as a turn key truck. I mentioned a few days ago that I was in Massachussets dynoing the motors for the truck and there are a few pics of the back up motor on the dyno that made around 760hp and of the race motor waiting it's turn. Also, you will see some of the very large parts on the shelf for the truck from the Howe Truggy rack to the 1.5" rod ends and massive front and rear hub for the truck. The rear differential housing is here and a very nice peice too. When the motor, trans, and rear dif parts come in over the next week or so we will get them in the fixture and start on the cage work for the truck as welll as the body mounting. At that point it will start to take shape a little more but I thought that some of you would like the early pics of what goes into a truck like this before you see a finished product.
If you have any questions feel free to ask. I am welding today on the Punisher class one (pictures to follow soon) so it may be a bit before I get back to you. Thanks, enjoy. Justin

Pretty interesting to see. I know the Mini-trucks are spec. I thought that the other truck classes were too, and thought you bought the chassis from CORR. The Ivan Stewart "PRO" thing was like that. It didn't do so well.
So, do you own a laser system, or just have good friends? The etched ruler is a nice touch.
Carl
P.S. I admire you guys that make the time to do the entire project on a Solidworks type program. For me, it's just certain critical parts and then off to do some fabbing. It's a tough call where to place your limited time.
Great job!

Carl, the pro 2 and 4 are spec and that is the reason behind the fixturing. There are still some trucks that are "one off design" but CORR is pushing for those to be phased out. I don't do enough laser work to justify the cost of a decent one (250k) so I guess you can say I have a good freind with one, especialy looking at the invoices I have paid, ouch!

When is the Phx races that you speak of? I only saw San Diego on the last schedule I looked at.

How awesome would that be, sign us up for tickets on the Phoenix races!

I'm in the middle of a CORR pro-2 design as well for a customer. I like the 4-link upper front mount.

Craig we will be running his wheel set up. His hubs are nice too and we are running a set up that will allow us to run the same hub front and rear so we have less spairs. I should clarify my statement about designing wheels. We tried to get the older Ultra wheel that many had raced before but they stopped producing them and the Baldwin's bought the remaining 30 sets. They had a tendency to break sometimes so we wanted a stronger one anyway. In talking to Jason at Tube Works about our rear diff the subject came up. He saw a need for it and ran with the wheel design. We had many discussions about them and we E-mailed chassis and front end drawings to him to work from as ideas. The look of the wheel is his and the work that went into it is his, we just sent what we wanted out of it to get the spindle we wanted and presto, he has many sets on the way. BTW, Jason is a right on guy if anyone here has a chance to work with him I would recomend it. Craig, thanks on the upper 4 link mount.
Queen, CORR is in discussions with Firebird to ink a race. It is too late for this year but if the deal is made then it will be on next years schedule. A freind at Firebird told me they will do whatever it takes in the construction of the track to make it happen so it looks pretty promissing. Justin

I know he has been super busy with trying to finish up the Punisher and a few other things. The owner of this truck has a SCORE pro truck which will be racing in 2 weeks, so they have been prepping that, but last I heard this CORR truck should be ready to run in a couple months.
I am sure Justin will chime in with the details when he can.

Been waiting on a lot of parts but most have come in and we are back on the truck now. In these pics are shots of the front and rear hubs, front spindles, custom offset wheels, rear diff, rear third member and axle, as well as the upper four link K member in the chassis. Been a little sticky out here and we need to get out the scotch brite and WD 40. Later, Justin

Tony at North American is using the same spindle & hub set-up on 2-pro-2 he's currently working on.
Is that table the wheel sitting on a fixture table? I've done a few tables both steel and 3/4" aluminum with tapped 3/8" holes on 2" centers thru out the table-awesome to work with, especially if somebody draws your fixtures to fit them!

By offsetting the wheels like that we can sink the spindle into the wheel quite a bit and run the inclination angle in the 7-9deg range where the front end will turn better. Without that offset we would be forced to run the spindle inward of the wheel like most off road set ups and the inclination would have to be in the 12-15deg range. Not an issue so much in desert racing or the dunes since those angles turn "well enough" but if you are shooting for more of a road racing type front end then less angle works a lot better.

Thanks, and yes it is a new fixture table. It is surface ground and the holes are tapped through. If you look very close you can see letters up one side and numbers up the other so that when the fixturing needs to be changed all you do is look at the new bolt on item that has a letter and number on its bolt holes so that you just bolt it on A-4 and another piece on G-8 and the table is ready to go for the next arm to be built. Sorta like the old game "Battleship" Later Justin

The "double" plating on the outside is there so support the shock mount section of the arm from bending at that point. The holes or ovals are there so that the center of the double plate can't lift off the side if the arm were to try and bend. By welding in the center of the double plate you can gain much more strength and all while loosing weight. The shape of the ovals were just for looks to set us apart. The arm is around 20-25lbs. I will weigh it next week and see.
