Has anyone ever seen a snowmobile in the dunes. I want to take one down there. Would I have any problems? I bet a 800cc 2-stoke could make it up Olds! :?

Well it would trash your hifax's on your track and if its watercooled say good bye to the engine. Snowmobiles radiator is in the gack behind the track so SNOW can hit causing it to COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If your sled is junk any way sure why not but if still ride in the winter then I think you could find better uses for it.

Take it out there! When else are you going to use it in AZ? You'll probably make it on Quicksand 4!

Ive seen snowmobiles back in Colorado at the dunes, and yes, they freakin cook. But like was said earlier, your goig to trash it unless you make like one run and pack up..

I saw a video clip on tv sometime last week. It had a snowmobile racing a pretty tricked out banshee in sand. The banshee was getting worked but finally caught up and pulled away at the top end.

There are a few snowmobile motors in quad chassis, they are very fast.if someone gets one done right and dialed in look out! Some of those motors have over 140hp stock.

There are a few tricks to pulling this off.
1. Install a small windshield washer pump/tank to cool the slides of the track. Fill it with 50/50 mixture of dishwashing soap and antifreeze. On the slides drill holes to inject into and groove the bottom of the slides so they will carry the coolant back.
2. Run the motor as rich as possible. If oil injected supplement with mix in the tank. This will hopefully prolong engine life (more than 1 run).
3. Change out the air filters to something that will stop the sand from getting in the motor.
4. Get a huge paddle track if available. I have seen a 2 inch one.
5. Put a flag on it. Must be legal.
6. Hang on   It will be the ride of your life.
This is a common set-up when they drag race snowmobiles during the summer on sod/grass.

Hey, I know this thread is like 3 yrs old but I was just thinking about something similar and posted in another forum the other day. More like a sled converted with front wheels and a paddle so you could get more than a one time out of it. Anybody seen or know of any links that I could look into this more?
Thanks.

There are a couple of guys who are desert racing snowmobiles, I think they were at the last BITD race.

Do a search for snowmobile grass drags and you'll find what exactly they are running. I'd suggest bypassing the radiator completely and hooking the hoses together, just ice the thing before the run. The thing you are worrying about is the slides for the track, so if you can get lubricant down there of some sort it'd be possible. You can also run the liquid machines in warmer weather, say 40's or so, but with a air or fan cooled machine it's not going to run well unless its about 20 degrees or less.

Thats pretty trick, notice the radiator location, and it looks like he just fab'd a spindle up for the atv tires in the front. I'll bet it rips!

I was reading this thread thinking that someone might have posted a pic of a snowmobile with wheels. After seeing the picture my first thought was... Awesome! Then I realized just how small my n**ts are cause I'd never have the marbles to ride one! That set up is truely insane.
