NO......... It is much more simple then that

The mic on your headsets is controlled by a squelch. This means you can set it to hear nothing, when it is quite out, or hear music, if you add XM or a ipod. Then, when you speak, the music quiets down and everyone in your car can hear you, you will also here them when they speak.

The button on the steering wheel is only for communicating outside of the car. Like to my car , or to a radio that we put in camp.
