Anyone had any issues with the Z400 making top end noise? Mine started making a clicking this past weekend that only seemed to get worse. Anyone got any ideas what it is, what might cause it??

valves might need adjustment?!? if they're a bit loose they usually do make a clicking sound. hope this gives you a lil bit of a start, T

The valves on a Z400 rarely need adjusting but that could be the problem. Take a look at your header bolts. Since I put my pipe on I've had to tighten them a couple of times. Nothing major but an exhaust leak will make a clicking type sound.

What ever this is it got progresivly louder. Its not the exhaust and I am guessing that an ill adjusted or loose valve would make for a sloppy running engine. Even though this engine is making noise its still running smoothe.

I too am thinking valve, but if it still runs strong and smooth, I am left baffled. Please keep us informed when you do find out what the problem is. Has the exhaust smoke changed colors???

There was no change in smell or color of exhaust. Either way its under warranty and it will get fixed but Its Baffling me too.

You and me both DH, Anything I can think of just does not make sense.
Does it make this sound across the RPM band, and in every gear??? Does the sound get faster or slower based on RPM and speed?
I know of a Gixxer that has a bend shift dog (I think the part was) in 3rd to 4th gear and does make a ticking sound (tranny based origin) But I am still baffled on this Z400's problem.

The sound is definitely RPM based.

T & DH - Check the bolts on the side where the heat shield is (I think thats what its called)! I just remembered that back at Thanksgiving the first part of the week mine was making a very similar noise and the higher the RPM's the louder the noise. I had lost a bolt and the vibration made it louder when the RPM's rose.
NO Honda comments hear me!?! >:<

Its definitely something internal. Its a solid metal tapping.

I don't know. There was definitely an undertone that was a vibration type of noise.

may sound dumb...but check all you fender mounts, i have heard many diff. noises on my Z ( I give it hell) and many of them tend to be the little fender mount brackets vibrating their way loose or just breaking

Just throw a loud pipe on it so you don't have to hear that annoying ticking sound.

I'm guessing an oil pump problem. When I lost my third gear on my Raptor the piece that broke off bounced around in the bottom of my case taking out the nylon gear that drives the oil pump. No oil getting to the top end and it got louder the more rpms I gave it and the hotter it got..

Could be close to correct. The fan was on when we got back from a ride and those fans very rarely come on.

Yes, thanks to warranties. I heard from Bert's on Saturday and it appears that the issue is with the Cam tensioner. It's tightened all the way but does not doing what it should. Bert's is having to call Suzuki to get their recommendation for a solution. Thanks for all the suggestions (at least I learned a little more about what might possibly go wrong) I'll give an update when I get some more info from Bert's.
