Well.. ,like the topic ask's. What tools do you carry with you in the car while on the dunes ?
Screamin Ian
This is what I keep in my toolbag. Keeping in mind it should be car specific.

Little electrical wire
snippers
electrical tape
zip ties
2 cresent wrenches
allen wrench set.

I had an issue with a power steering line popping off the fitting, so I also had a pre made section of hose with AN coupling ready to go just in case.

If I need to fix anything I would have to have someone go back to camp to run parts, so I would have them grab the correct tools at that time.

I just keep all the tools I use while working on my rail in the garage in an ammo box bolted to the frame. Always know where to find the specialty tools (like that allen wrench for the tranny drain/fill plugs, or the crows foot that makes resetting the timing belt on my 2.3 Ford quick and easy) and if anything happens chances are I've got the tool to fix it.

Doesn't help others very much though unless they have similar vehicles. A few times I've stopped to help someone and the one tool they need is the one I don't have. Like I'll have a 10mm socket (since it's the only way to get the valve cover off on my motor) but they really need a 10mm wrench which I don't have since none of the 10mm bolts on my motor are wrench accessible....but the bolt they're trying to get off is partially stripped and my 12 point socket just own't cut it.

Still most of the time I've got the tools to help out...it's just the oddball sitiuations I don't have what someone else needs.

ONE-A-DAY
- duck tape
- jumper cables
- fuse tester and fuses
- socket set
- open end wrench set
- pliers, wire cutters, vise grip
- zip ties
- assorted wire
- mini sledge hammer

Went to Walmart and bought the bag and all of tools in it for about $40. Pep boys has good cheap tool sets as well. Sure its junk, but its not the stuff you use every day, just in an emergency.

besides the above, I also carry 2 CV's, Bailing wire, Snap on 3/8" Socket(cv bolts), wire with alligator clips on each side in case i need to bypass a fuse or breaker. Grease for the cv. A can of starting fluid(in case i need to re-bead a tire), plus at night, can signal down a passing car with a big fire ball. A baggy of various nuts and bolts. Flash light and 1 gallon of water.(if i need a drink or if the car needs one). Two quarts of oil. In case of roll over. Couple of clean rags. Extra front heim joint. Yeah yeah a lot of stuff, but these little things have saved me and A LOT of duners from being stranded. easily all fits in that empty wing trunk.

I keep enough parts and tools in my trailer to fix almost anything. In the car I take the minimum tools to get by, a tow strap and a coupe ratchet straps just in case. Never fails though you will always need the tool you don't have with you.

Funny how everyone is worried about weight up to high like a radiator in the wing. And oh no we need to have the fuel cell lower for stability. Then you have the same guys running a MATCO box in there wing tool box. shocker.gif

Do you pull a trailer with all that stuff or do you have a chase vehicle with onboard machine shop?

time for me to reorganize my onboard tool selection so let's bump this up and see if anyone has any new ideas...

I got me a piece of pipe with 1.5" ID that is about 6" long for a sleeve incase of a broken frame or A-Arms. I also have a small cordless drill, 9.6V or something, for whatever but it has come in handy on past vehicle projects. Drill bit set (I keep in the spare pipe) and Taps for the most common bolts on the car. LOCKTITE!

How about a sub compact Taurus .40?
