Full Version: ORBA goes to bat to keep Sand Mountain open

Roy Denner from ORBA (www.orbanet.org) was in Washington D.C. last week to lobby our representatives regarding off-road issues throughout the country. While there, he took the opportunity to meet with 17 Congressional office representatives, BLM officials, and Craig Manson, Assistant Secretary of the Interior in charge of Fish and Wildlife and Parks. All of the meetings included a briefing on the situation at Sand Mountain (more detail -> http://www.sandmountain-nv.org/smra_emerge...cy_closure.htm).

Here are a few highlights:

Congressman Jim Gibbons (R-NV) represents almost all of Nevada with the exception of the Las Vegas & Laughlin area. Roy was able to sit down with Sandra Keil who is Congressman Gibbons' legislative assistant. Ms. Keil was very interested in the situation since Sand Mountain is one of the largest recreation draws in the state. If would be good for Congressman Gibbons to hear from users of Sand Mountain (and other public lands in Nevada for that matter). He can be reached at:

Roy also met with Craig Manson, Assistant Secretary of the Interior in charge of Fish and Wildlife and Parks. Mr. Manson was also very interested in learning about the justification for any closures without proper science to back it up.

A big thanks to ORBA for fighting for our right to Dune!

If you own an off-road related business, please take a moment to learn about the Off-Road Business Association (ORBA).

I just got off the phone with Roy and he's very much taken this issue to heart.

Sand Mountain is under the exact same type of attack that Glamis was under 3 years ago.

Now that we're all more awake, we all need to do what we can to see that Sand Mountain does not end up like Glamis!!!

"As a nice departure from the usual antics, I saw no
burning tires rolled down the mountain, to neither;
litter the flatlands with machinery grabbing spools of
wire, nor smash through camps, destroying everything
in the way."
http://www.planetsand.com/weekends2001/easter_nv.htm

"Unfortunately, some people don't respect the mountain. During my visit, I saw several blown-out radial tires, car parts and beer cans scattered about or buried in the sand. I was told that some people even set tires on fire and push them down the dunes at night. The results of these pranks could be seen on the dunes in the form of black smudges against the fine, whitish sand. "It makes a hell of a mess," said Jay Jamison, a maintenance worker with the BLM Carson City Field Office, who was making a stop at the area on the day I visited. "The radial tires burn for a few days. ... It ruins the sand, and it ruins the environment."

Miller said burning tires are considered a public safety hazard because they could roll into the camp area at the base of the dunes and hurt somebody. The metal strips from burnt or blown-out tires can wreak havoc on OHVs. "
