I was just at G this past weekend with the group and my Rhino is Bone Stock. The stock tires as you all know fall alittle short is the sand.Brad and amy's Rhino has the paddles and it works great but what do you all think and what do run
Maxxrhino
I have paddles and love them, I actually got my new ones last week and have been contimplating selling the old ones they are glued Skat traks with douglas aluminum wheels. or maybe selling the new tires and letting the old ones just be I don't know but it ripped witht he paddles...

Run knobbies, like Maxxis big horn or ITP TerraCross. Both tires work well on hardpack and in the sand. You don't want a tire with too much tread because it'll rob power. I've tried paddles and they work well in the sand but i just like knowing i can go anywhere with the tires i have, without changing them.

Also, beadlocks - are a must in the sand.

Thanks Guys

How many people have actually de-beaded their tires?

Sand Trap Sorry I missed you this weekend!!

I run the ITP Mud lites and with sand as smooth as it was went up left of center at OLDS!! 1dude.gif Not the road this time!! So for a multi purpose tire (sand/Hardpack) I'd go with the Mud Lites.

Wes, I run my ranger with the stock tires and dont even change the air pressure, I can get pretty much anywhere I feel comfortable driving, but then again I like a challenge too. If I aired down I think it would climb the hills better. But its not my dune ride either. I like to use it for trash runs on big weekends or to fart around on. most of the places I take it in Glamis or Gordons I wouldnt want paddles on it anyway. Boardmanville, wash road, gordons flats, etc.

Aaron runs the ITP dune star on his rhino and swears by them. Here is the link.

I am sure you will have tons of opinions, but as long as you are having fun, thats all that matters.
Derwud
Can you just run the dune stars on the rear with the mud lites in front?

4 that i know of, including myself. Plus if you pop a tire and dont' have a spare but need to get back you can drive on it without the tire comming off the wheel and getting tangled in your spindle or arms. Also if you like to drive on hardpack or rockcrawl the beadlocks will really come in handy.

I would think the "look factor" of beadlocks would be enough to sell the sand people.........sheesh! icon_biggrin.gif

Guy in our group has debeaded his twice!!

This subject comes up a lot on another forum and I asked the same question there. The consensus was the Carlisle 489 is the best multi-purpose tire for the Rhino. For sand you should stay with 25 inch tire.
The Terracross is a 26 inch and you have to modify/cut the plastic.
Maxxis Bighorns seemed to be the second choice.
Mud-Lites have been scored as too heavy.
Good luck.
Maxxrhino
Well I have ran my Bighorns and they do greaat as well, but the paddles seem to tear it up the best, and yes you can or at least I do run the regular tire up front and paddles just in the rear...
se7en30
Ill agree with flying rhino...

Smallest, lightest tire you can find...
25in Carslyle AT489 10in in front 11in in rear
-
Beadlocks are definately the way to go but REMEMBER; the heavier the wheel the slower you will go up the hills.
This is why some do better than others - the weight of the wheel/tire combo.

You can get the C series wheels in several varieties - they have a version that is SUPER light.

We weighed a replacement setup... - a set of 25in Bighorns with standard C series wheel & replaced it with a set of AT489s with the lighter C series wheel.

The 489s were 10lbs lighter EACH wheel/tire. WOW!

That is a HUGE difference and you feel it in the dunes.
Screamin Ian
Just to clarify, the Carlisle 489's came stock on my ranger.

I am going to be due for new tires in a couple months, looks like I know what to stay with now.

Yep, they come on several of the Polaris Utility quads too. I was told by a fellow racer the other day that he saw them for sale a "walmart"; he had a bit of a grin on his face. I wasn't sure if that was a "dig" or what but I was like...COOL 1dude.gif
For how fast we go through tires; I like them cheap and readily available smile.gif

How much heavier or lighter are the 489s and lighter C then the stock SE wheels and tires?

Sorry, dont have any stock SE tires in house anymore - do you have the weight of one? - A 25x11x12 AT489/LIGHT Cseries setup is 28lbs EACH (aired up). The 25 in bighorns on other Cseries weighed 38.19lbs Each.

BTW - when you order C series wheels - be sure to check the weight - they come in 3 different types (each weighs different amounts) if I remember correctly.

ONE issue you MAY have when considering tires though... 489's are 4ply - this is one of the reasons they are lighter. Bighorns/Terracross' are 6 ply. The 6plys are better for desert racing - the 4plys are best for duning/short course/MX, etc. - remember the more weight on the rear axles the more power you will need to turn them...
This is why the duning drag racers run "triple buff" or "comp cut" tires with blue label wheels - the lighter the wheel/tire combo the faster you are going to be / as they rob less power...

do u run it in 4x4 with that set up ?

The 489's come in 2, 3 and 4 ply versions. Be sure to get the one you want. I had also heard that there was now a 6 ply version, but I couldn't find any info on it.

"Bugkiller" there were a few times we used 4wd for the extra push on some things, but for the most part it went everywhere in 2wd...

According to their site anything under 4ply isn't rated for over 50mph - we do well over 50 with our stage 2 / stage 3 KMS motors 1dude.gif

I would like to try a set of the 2 plys but would be afraid that i would HAVE TO HAVE beadlocks with fear of rolling the sidewalls.

I like OMFs but I have a sponsorship for racing ATVs with Hiper (carbon fiber) wheels and have been holding out on their wheels to come out b4 I went with beadlocks.

Have any of you tried the ITP Holeshot ATRs? While I know a lot of people run the Big Horns, and I DO like the look of that tire, I think the much lighter Holeshots would perform better in the sand and still do great in general off-roading. And they are 6-ply.

TIRE.........................WEIGHT
Holeshot ATR front.... 18.85 lbs.
Bighorn front............ 23.05 lbs.
Holeshot ATR rear..... 22.00 lbs.
Bighorn rear............. 28.15 lbs.

Here's a pic.
se7en30
KG - I have had the Holeshot ATRs suggested to me by a few people that I would definately trust.

Their feedback was this:
If you mostly ride trails and sometimes ride sand: Holeshot ATR due to the 6ply rating.
If you mostly ride sand and sometimes ride trails: Carslyle 489ATs 4ply.

We tested the ITP Dune stars and found that they have the best floatation in soft sand, was able to spin the tires without robbing power and got great traction up steep hills, even with 2 guys in the Rhino. We run 26" all the way around with the wide offset. They don't rub unless you hit hard. Anything over stock (25"), the shocks should be tightened and/or replaced. We recommend changing the rear shocks (at the least) anyway since basically they suck. They tend to buck. Replacing them will give you a whole new ride.

The Terra Cross R/T is another excellent tire and works well in most conditions. It is a wide tire with good floatation and a wide footprint. It has a wide tread pattern that wraps around the side of the tire that makes it great for going through canyons and rocky areas. We run the 14" rim with 11" in the rear and 9" in the front.

The Bighorn is a good mildly agreesive tire and is good in most areas. The Mudlite is good too, is very agressive but tends to trench in soft sand but is great in mucky conditions and rocks.

Any other questions, feel free to contact me. We have great prices on all tires and wheels.

So is everyone staying with the 12 inch wheels or they going to the 14's when they switch?

The 14's are going to weigh significantly more. I'd stick to the 12's but you may want the "look" of the 14's.
TEE
I run itp Terra cross 14x9 all the way around and they work great good bite and float and they are a radial tire so you can run them with less air and they seem to hold the bead good I had 14x 11 in the rear and it was to much bite. 1dude.gif

We generally run the 12" tire and rim, but the Terra Cross only comes in 14" and some people like the look of the 14" instead of the 12", kinda like 20" rims on trucks vs. 16". They can be heavier but it is preference. Most all tire and rim combinations (except the Terra Cross) comes in both sizes. We also just got in a Sick Looking Chrome 8 Spoke deep dish rim for the Rhinos too.

New Bighorns...WildBill Edition taz.gif

We took off 3.4 pounds off the rear Bighorns (26")

Fronts went down by 3.1 pounds (26")

So... I have Rokstars with OMF bead-locks.

Rear size is 26x12-12; fronts are 26x9-12

Rears now weigh in at 39.0 pounds with wheels(stock Maxxis are 33.2 pounds with steel wheels)

Fronts are now 34.3 pounds with wheels(stock Maxxis are 30.0 pounds with steel wheels)

Come check them out at the SSSS!

TerraCross tires come in 12 inch, just look at their website or goto rockymountainatv.com

I have had mine for over a month, although I ran into a number of places that insisted they didnt come in 12 inch size even though ITP's website said otherwise.
