ok!
well that's what the wife said to a new car. Finally!
selling my Playtech Mid-Travel and looking at new cars.
I have a deposit with Don at Sand Cars Unlimited and so far for the money I think I am getting the most for it.
I like the Suspensions Unlimited cars and I have driven one.(very impressive)
And I also know without a doupt that Don builds one of the best cars out there.

Any other suggestions out there????

But I have to admit I have good days and bad days about how much money I will be spending on a TOY.
Affording it is not the issue, it's just the point of it.

Any and all .02 will be appreciated.

I had the exact same dilema at the end of last season. I eventually made a decision and bought Don's personal SCU. It had everything I wanted and was already finished, so I bought it. Part of the way I justified the money was I had him put a windshield in it, made it street legal and have been driving it around town regularly.
I also felt I couldn't go wrong with the SCU for a couple reasons. First off, it is a great car. second, it has such a good reputation that if I decided to sell it I wouldn't lose my arse on it.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

oh, and welcome to the board...

I'd try to drive one of each, the exact model that you're thinking of buying. That should help you to decide.

Are you looking for a 2 or 4 seater, rear or mid engine, sand only or dual purpose?

4-5 seater and something strong enough for the dirt every now and then.

I was on a buget when I bought my SU car and it was 2 years old. I am very happy with my decision handles very well with 4 people and "what whoops" dont feel a thing and very reliable

Don't even second guess yourself. You made a very wise decision and most likely did your homework in choosing Don. He will not and nor will his car dissapoint you. Post pics of the car as you get it built up!! peace.gif

My first car was a SCU and when I get around to it, my second car will be a SCU!!

Two SCU cars and ''its all good'' I will be getting a third--Already one on order, you made a great choice! peace.gif Oh and like O soto said I made money when I sold mine.

550 but really about 526 and I like the S-4 no problems so far (knock on wood) and we don't baby it------next time I'll probably go with the heavy duty S-4 for 4k more and a blown 427 we will see!!! Good luck on your new car Getter Done!

I have an scu 4 seater with an ls2 and an s4! Don builds a great car he was on the money for build date and it is the best car i have owned! You will not be dissapointed!

You wont lose, you can drive it two seasons and still sell it for 60K, sold our 02 in a day for 43K and it was 39,900 new----no by-pass shocks or power steering they hold their value well.
tomfish1
I don't think you can go wrong with eaither of those companies. Many happy customers. However if you are starting to question the $$ end of it Sandwinder puts out a very similar car for usually around $10k+ less and is also a proven car with a great track record for service and dependability.

...... I can't spell.

I HAVE HAD BOTH. I currently have SCU. I would buy from DON again and pass on an SU.

DON @ Sandcars.

Next question?

O Soto, Pretty much said it all.
Both SCU and SU are great cars, you won’t go wrong with either car.
But the SCU is my choice I have one of Dons big car’s S4 with LS2.
It is up for sale in the buy and sale section, we just don’t need that big of a car any more.
If it sells I will most definitely have Don build me another SCU, if it doesn't sell I will run it this season.

Please post pic's of your build would like to see how it turns out.

You said it. You can't go wrong with an SCU car. The SCU fab crew is great to work with as well.

From what I understand, Sand Seeker has the first '06 "big car" model that Don produced. I picked up the second one from Don in May. It is a beautiful, well engineered car and I expect to have many years of fun with it. Unless of course I want to upgrade to the latest '08 model.

Although my build took a little longer than I hoped it would (i.e. Mendeola, sheetmetal fab, etc. delays), I enjoyed working out the details that were specific to what I wanted for the car and watching the build - took lots of pictures too. Also on occation, I got to meet some nice fellow SCU owners who also dropped in at the shop.

I just finished the custom paint work this summer and am ready to roll in October.

You know, I think my wife expects to drive it too! laugh1.gif

As for the cost of these toys, well, if affording it is not the issue, then you will forget those rational thoughts once you drive it.

Thanks for the comments.
Met with Don today to go over the build, seemed very patient and willing to listen and then give his .02 which was usually right on the money.
Surprised as to how laid back he was in regards to the little adders here and there and the no extra cost for alot of them.
Most builders nickel and dime you to death for the most petty shiat.
Looking forward to Thanksgiving.
duner21
^^^^ that is one thing i liked also he sticks to his price and doesnt nickel and dime you. So give us some details what are you getting?
Mike330R
I was trying to make the same decision between the 2. SCU was a better bang for the buck and I am currently building it in my garage.

gone
I was going to say something nice about Don and SCU but it doesnt look like I ned to. Plenty of other people have said all that needs to be said.

Enjoy the new car.

Both are great builders! I have to say, if your spending that kind of money you sould get what you want. The time factor is another thing. You want a car for this season right? I think Suspensions Unlimited is about 4-5 weeks out! They even have sandcars in stock! Not sure were SCU is at on there build time.
I think your best bet is a Suspensions Unlimited no dout! pass on the other.

All right, all right...

I'll round up a few pics and start a thread for your viewing pleasure.
---------------------
BTW O Soto Gari, I watched him build his/your car while mine was being done. I'm about 20 minutes from the SCU shop so I was able to see the build on several cars. Your car looks great and should be a very quick and nimble duner - probably as fast or faster than many of the V8's.

You lucky dog - driving it on the streets in AZ!

Not alot of money but just the point of it.
And we came in recommended from an existing S/U customer. that would of made (3) S/U cars in our camp and in the dunes together......

Hope the show goes good for you guys.

I'm sorry they couldn't make the right deal for you.

Wow, 2 cars would of been great. Would of made the family larger. smile.gif

There could of been serveral reasons around the price, it's hard to say.
If it was a cash deal.. well different story, if it was a finance deal, depends what the bank would lend- from price to downpayment and credit score.

Depends on what we have in the cars as well, labor time, parts price, manpower ect. If they were on the showroom... they were cars ready to go, paid for out of our pockets already. There is a convenience right there. There really isn't that much in these cars, when you look at our operation and service that we provide. So shoot, just too many factors.

I am sure they guys tried to get it through for you but it just wouldn't make it.

When I wanted to but my 2nd SU car Larry had sold the biz to the new owner. I won't bore you with the long story, but in the end I was told from Mr Begin and I quote, "We are like a Saturn dealership and we don't make deals". What an idiot.....
45 days later I had a new SCU TURN-KEY. Don took good care of me. He took care of every issue I had and then some. Havn't looked back since.
Best of luck this year Don at the SSSS

Shippgbiz,
Won't bore them (public) with the details again as well, some of us have class. Also it's personal.

That's not it -in a nutshell and ^^ knows it.
There is more to it, lots. Wouldn't believe the things checked into and the all around opinion was alike.

There is always 1 who feels he is owed a deal at everything and everybody, no matter how they are treated or what you pay them for something. How do you keep from running into them???

Can't do nothing about them.. but move on.

Staying dignified on this one~ smile.gif

Best of luck to ya, shipper.

Mike your a nut! ^^

You HAVE owned a S/U. icon_wink.gif

Good to hear from you.
mikebob
I can speak for both builders as I have owned both. In the mid to late ninties I bought a car from Don, made good friends with him and he took care of me. Two years ago I bought my first SU after owning a Buckshot and a Funco. I think John and Cat are great folks and consider them good dunin'n friends. The service I get from John and Ron (Service Manager) is second to none and much better than that of other builders that I have dealt with. I know anytime I have a question or need information it feels like these guys will take care of you.

For example a year ago I was in Oregon for ten days. Subsequently I smoked a clutch. One call to SU all the parts were there at the KOA the next morning. I know it would have been a burden for Don to accomodate this as many other builders.

Just my .02 as this is what I have experienced.
