So, do you think these are the latest "fad" because of their MOD limitations that will be out by next year, or are Side by Side Vehicles here to stay? With Honda coming out soon, I can't imange SSV's are going to die...

The "fad" is already fading...
Just like how the 50 fad came and went, sometime soon you there be more supply of rhinos on the market than demand...already this is starting.
The die hards will be the ones keeping the market going..

Lifted golf carts seemed to last for a while. I'd imagine the Rhino will do the same. Well until the next compact toy comes out.

You already see people selling off Rhinos. A lot of them have been decked out with 10k worth of before they even hit dirt.

I really don't think it's a fad. The SxS's are fitting a huge niche in the market at a reasonable price. I expect the product line to expand some more, with an increase of different models, possibly some more 4 seaters. True, there are a bunch of early adopters that are already moving on to something new, but I think folks are only just realizing how versatile a SxS can be. I can't really see the sales staying as high as they've been, I'm sure it will taper off soon, especially with the increasing numbers of used SxS's on the market, but that's just a typical occurance of any popular item.

i believe that the only people that think its a fad are the people that dont own one. The only people that are selling them are the people that are stepping up to a long travel car moving away or came into money trouble. I have not heard one person say they are bored with them so they are selling.

I don't think it's a fad. These things are way too much fun and very capable.
For $10,000 I got a toy that I can use at the dunes, in the mountains, in the desert, on Jeep trails, in the snow, in the pits at the races, I can prerun races in it, I could race it with a few mods if I wanted to, it can launch a boat on a boat ramp, move trailers around a property, etc, etc, etc....
I could buy 4-5 of these for the cost of a decent buggy these days.

And how much does a quad or dirt bike cost? How many people can those hold each?
As for speed, at the recent Whiplash race the winning Rhino was doing lap times only 7 minutes off the winning Unlimited Class 1 race buggy (a $100,000+ car).

These wont affect LT prices a bit, supply and demand does that.
These things are a kick in the pants, I have always loved trail riding but when I started duning I needed to pipe, jet and change my suspension on my quad to really get around and haul arse which meant I gave up with a utility quad, I wound up giving my dad my 4x4 quad.
The rhino means I can now trail ride with wife or buddy next to me. It is not a replacement for my LT, I WILL NOT be taking my rhino back to china wall, gordons to gecko run, etc, I have a LT for that. I will run up to wash 13 or the compound,go get parts, wife can go shop at vendor row At the dunes. Ill use it at my cabin in the White Mountains to go trail riding or go to the store (its street legal). I can trail ride behind the lakes near me,so I dont think its a fad,it fills a niche.
I think the problem with the rhino is the cost, I rode in one 2 years ago, I thought WOW 10K for this ? You must have a hole in your head but once you own it or ride it in a few more times your realize the fun to money ratio is great.

They are limited in the dunes from my personal experience. They do great in the small to medium sized
dunes, and actually make it fun again in the small stuff.I found my self using my Rhino more than my bike
last year but I will always keep a bike or I would never be able to see the top of the big dunes again. some
people just don't get it which I understand but until you drive one and have fun figuring out its limataions
its hard to explain the rush you get.You can get alot of places with the rhino just not as fast and you have to pick tour lines different.

I think the "bling" for the rhinos may be a passing fad... but not the machines themselves.
At least, not to the people who use them as much as possible.
We're already planning a day trip to the Chocolate Mountains, a trip we never would have taken in the buggy. And the barbecue under the stars we had last year using the rhino? Priceless. Oh, and hide-and-seek with the green lights at Ogilby will be really fun this year.
And then on that same weekend I'll dune the little dunes in the rhino and sit passenger in the buggy for the big dunes.
If we were forced to choose between a buggy and a rhino? That would be tough.
For me.
Bryan would dump the rhino in an instant.

To each their own. I don't particular care for the tricked-out rhinos... but that's because I like mine just fine the way it is. And the people who trick them out? That's the way they like it.
Hey... as long as you're out there playing, who cares if it's a fad or a life-long thing.

Absolutely!
First weekend out in the rhino mine came home with qnarly gash in the frame.
People said "you can paint it" and "it's hardly noticable" and tried their best to console me.
I, on the other hand, posted pictures of it and wouldn't dream of ever covering it up!
We considered getting it painted... even had a really cool paintjob designed.
But then I would worry about it and I'm just not ready to avoid the mud puddles and bushes and way-too-close caverns.

Well, / I sure want one / we cant afford the funco rail that I really want and my wife wants the Rhino instead of the quad. SO, Here is what we are doing in the consilidation effort to afford the rhino
EVERYTHING IN BOLD IS 4 SALE NOW TO GET RHINO !!400ex (wifes current ride)sell it towards Rhino
250r sell it and buy a TRX 450r (i need a 4 stroke to ride with the small kids (I will miss that 250r though)
24 foot enclosed trailer / SELL IT towards the Rhino
125cc pit bike / Sell it to pay for gas for the RhinoTHE END RESULT1 RHINO / (a little tricked out !) for the Wife
1 TRX 450 R / (the basic upgrades) for me
1 TRX 90 for my son
1 KFX 50 for my little girl
Iwill still keep the Rhino even after Iget the Funco in 2008 because Ithink it is SWEET for all the run around camp / moutains / and moving stuff around
I dont think they will fade.....maybe a little burn out....but you know what they say....Its better to burn out.....than fade away !!!!!!)

The quote below was recently made by a long-time Yamaha dealer here is SoCA, on the topic of Rhino's;
"At the rate they're selling, and Yamaha's projections, they will be more than a fad...I hope! Yamaha has devoted a new assembly line for them to triple production. The next worry is the attorneys..the lawsuits are starting to "roll" in, kinda like the 3 wheelers. Im worried they might be like the adult Z50/Crf 50 minibike fad...everyone had one, they put thousands of $'s in them, they're worth $300 - $500 now. I know of dealers that have hundreds of the trick Chinese ones, can't give them away."

Mr. Off-Road
Sep 15 2006, 07:38 AM
They could try to sue all they want but I think that the ATV industry learned a lot from the days of the 3-wheeler.
Look at all the warning stickers that cover your vehicle. They warn very explicitly the dangers and limits of the vehicle. They didnt have those back in the day of the 3-wheelers, it was just in the manual not on the bike itself. Which meant that back then someone could get on a 3-wheeler and not know about the handling characteristics or that riding with 2 people while carrying a metal bucket filled with water could be dangerous because there was no warning label. Yes, I know this sounds lame but its what the ATV industry had to do in order to get people to become accountable for their stupidity or lack of experience.
Someone suing doesnt have a chance against a Yamaha lawyer team, ...
Now if you want to know who should really worry,... the sandrail manufacturers.... because someone driving a rail rolls it and gets hurt they could sue the manufacturer because there wasnt any proper warning labels on the vehicle that informed the driver (and passengers) of the *potential* dangers.
Wait and see...

I don't think it is a fad. Just like snowboarding, it will peak and it will fall back to normal levels of participation. All new, fun, cool things do. Some go all away, but stay around.
I don't see myself owning one, but I have driven them, and I had a blast. But I would expect more restrictions as they become more readily available to more people.
