WHAT WHEEL BASE ARE YOUR TYPICAL 4 SEATER cars? and what wheel base are typical mid engine cars? I am concidering a mid engine 454 car-th400- or glide to a c/v driveline you guessed it a one ton c/v on the trans snoot and diff flange to gain a little down travel- with a dana 60 center section made for irs- I have to moch up weights and also figure in more weight for the middle of the car - Pro's and cons? I think I could gain about 4-5 " of down travel -and keep the weight of this rig as low as possible at the same time- But it would almost have to be a 2 seater i figure maybe 125 on the wheel base- Jess

If you don't have the $$ for a McMullin (probably the best option of ANY behind that motor), talk to the V8 rail boys...
Their set up is hard to beat: mid-front engine

Hey Jess,
I think 125" would work fine. Look at Revenge's website, I believe he has some specs on the Silencer descripion page. Othe mfg probably do as well.
So the rear diff will be mounted in a fixed cradle or subframe? What is the min length of driveshaft you can run?

Justin at Revenge built a buggy like that using a Predator frame, it is a badass looking buggy.

I'd say that 120" - 125" would be pretty good.

Agreed, 120 to 125" is a good target. Any longer and you'll lose the sharp turning radius that's desired in the dunes when you get in tight stuff. It will have to be a 2 seater otherwise it would be way too long. Sounds like a fun project.

Don't think you can even come close to the 120- 125 target with a BB/TH400/D60 in 'behind the seats' configuration.
If you want a short wheelbase in a mid config. you will need a transaxle. Few transaxles will stand up to a 454. And if you find one, you will pay dearly.
Here's a wild idea for you:
Mount the 454 behind the seats.
Mount the IRS D60 facing the REAR of the car.
Mount the TH400 in the rear of the car, with the torque converter at the extreme rear.
CV/drive shaft from the 454, angled to the side of the TH400 bellhousing.
Fab a gear or chain "side drive" to support the torque converter and bring the trans input to the side of the bell housing.
This greatly reduces the loading on the long, angled driveshaft and CVs or U-joints.
It also balances the weight out while maintaining a short wheel base.
Just a wild idea...

120" is easy with a 454/PG combo. The 454/TH400 combo will be a bit harder since it is right at 9 inches longer. But even then, depending on the frame design, the 400 is probably easy enough to do as well.

Its time to find a sponsor huh - oh yeh I'm the sponsor for my own ride -hehe- Galen I happen to have an extra 454 -its needs some stuff -you know a set of alunum heads -a higher lift roller cam and roller rockers -solid this time- and The rest i have - She should be a solid 650 horse -w/o nos and we will shoot it with a 200 shot- And run a dana 60 35 spline Arb-and maybe even a switch-able rear steer for those tight area's hehe- Jess
