Voice: Any compromise in dunes is a loss to off-roaders

In reference to your opinion: "Ramping Up," from Wednesday you say that Imperial Valley residents should be happy because the final version of the Recreation Area Management Plan for the Imperial Sand Dunes allows more visitors to the dunes.
"The final version increased visitor limitations in the dunes area to 80,444, up from 55,403 in the draft plan, and that could mean a big difference in our economy."
But you are missing some very important information. There are no limits in the dunes, currently, and any limit, either 50,000 or 80,000 or even 100,000, will ultimately hurt the Imperial Valley by reducing income from visitors.
The "rollback of court-ordered environmental closures" you mention is not a rollback but a compromise. The RAMP is suggesting a permit system that will all but close out legitimate dune users as the environmental groups and large off-road groups fight each other for the potentially costly permits.
And finally, your closing paragraph suggesting that the plan seems fair and reasonable and also suggesting that the off-roaders and environmentalists are "never happy" shows just how little you know about this subject. The off-road community was quite content until the environmental groups started using junk science or worse, NO science to bring lawsuits against the Bureau of Land Management, forcing them to close half of the dune riding area. The off-roaders are fighting to RETAIN their riding area, not expand it. Any compromise represents a loss to off-roaders and a win to the fringe environmental groups.
