I was thinking of adding a pipe and set of paddles to my daughters
Honda 250EX.Anyone out there do something similar?I am afraid the paddles will bog the motor down.
PapaPerry
I ran paddles on my daughters stock 250EX before I bought my 400EX. It allowed her to go up some hills better than the stock tires. I will be buying some new ones for her this off season.

It did slow the speed a bit, but wasn't that bad.

I put paddles on my daughter's 250, then took them off once she got used to duning, they bogged the motor down too much (still won't go up China Wall). It has a WB pipe and a K&N, but the carb needs re-jetting and my hands aren't that small! I don't know how much HP the pipe provided, but it sounds like its going faster! If you pipe and don't jet, expect it to sputter some at higher RPMs

If you put on paddles use skat trak gliders so you don't bog down the moter . a pipe and K&N filter will help get you some power as well ,Don't worry about the head pipe your not going to gain all that much anyway , this should wake your daughters bike up just enough .

Something must be up with you Cali/AZ/NV folks... Either that or there is a major difference in the sand up here. My friend put 8 blade haulers(20 inch) on his kids' 250ex and it did just fine. WB E-Series slip on w/the quiet core/K&N/jetted. Hauled my nearly 300# behind around. Granted, I wasnt the fastest guy out there, but I climbed a few hills I didnt expect I could.

It will run with paddles, but it robs allot of power, and the bike does better without them overall once the rider knows how to ride the dunes. Try the same bike without the paddles to see what I mean.

What a lot of people do is put 8 paddle tires on the 250x and have a hard time with bogging down the motor. The ticket is to use 6 paddle Sand Skates and you shouldn't have any problems. The 8 paddles are just to much for that quad.
SHOCKER
Use the 6 paddle Gliders. they're small paddle and are made by Skat-Trac.

Major difference - You just have sand. We have SAND DUNES!

Hmmm.. So that big hill I went up and over wasnt a dune. Interesting. Bansh88, I would love for you to come up here some time so I could take you down into the trees and then you could tell me whether paddles would help or not!! KG can tell you about some of those. A good place to see what I'm talking about is http://www.out4sand.com (another guy I know) The Sand Lake page has some good treeline(aka hillshots or holeshots or treeshots) action. Feel free to check out all of his pics. :cheese:
Bansh88
I'm sure that "big hill" you went up was cute. I'm not knocking what you guys have. It looks fun. But, have you ridden Glamis? I don't think there is even a comparison. Isn't the sand up there all wet? Has anyone here ridden both areas to give an accurate comparison?
Rubberneck
I've never ridden up in Oregon but I do know a 250EX isn't gonna do too much hill climbing at glamis. Especially with a big person on it.
Bansh88
Aww. How sad. Is that "big person" you?
Shane-0
No I havent ridden at Glamis. Someday for sure. All I was saying that if it could haul my butt around(and climb some decent hills)with 8 paddle haulers, it should do just fine with his daughter on it. I didnt mean to get into a pissing match over whos dunes are better. Most of the peeps I know who have ridden both are in Idaho this week. (Andy(wapawekka) if you want to chime in here, feel free  )

Shane-O,
Thanks for the link to the other sites, always nice to see what else it out there. A fellow Glamis addict went up the the Oregon Dunes and had a blast.

On the 250EX, yeah paddles will work, but it still robs power and the bike should be light enough with a kid on it to dune well without them, and if his girls are like my girls, they like speed. So if you can keep the paddles off (I haven't tried the six paddles- maybe you can borrow some to test out), she may like the bike at least one more season before she starts asking for a bigger bike....btw, my daughter is 11, but jumps on my 440ex to blast up China Wall, really pisses off the 14 yo when she smokes her...

If you can make it down to Glamis, I'll be happy to show you around.

Regards,

Tr0n

Thanx for the invite tron. One of these days I'll take you up on that... Same goes for up here. My friend sold(traded actually)his 250 off so its all moot at this point. smile.gif His kids are 15(daughter) and 13(son). They like the 400ex better too.

I put paddles, air filter, opened up the air box for more air flow, put on a WB silencer and re-jetted my sons and he can keep up with all of the banshees he rides with and climbs most of the hills at Glamis with no problems. Re-jetting and freeing up the air intake is the key to making all the other mods work. He loves it even though he still likes riding my 400EX for big hill climbs. Good Luck, Jim.

What jet(s) did you end up using?
Jimmiee
I can not remember now the exact jet number but I went up 2 jet sizes. There are 3 or 4 different jets that come stock from the factory. You will have to pull the jet and then go up two sizes from there. The good thing is the 250ex is much easier to do than the 400ex. The other thing I did was change the number of plates in the WB silencer to eight to ten to force some bottom end grunt. There is no one number that is best you will have to play with it to find the magic but gives you somewhere to start. Good Luck, Jim
