woooooo hooooooo I'm so excited I can't hardly stand it!!!
Most people don't know that two groups stepped up and volunteered to organize the 2004 MLK holiday weekend cleanup (THE annual Glamis north dunes cleanup), the American Sand Foundation in partnership with Kim Kammer (Kim organized it last year), and DUNERS under the guidance of founder Jennifer Whyte (Jennifer organized it the 5 previous years).
The American Sand Foundation has withdrawn its offer and the task has been assigned to DUNERS.
Now, we've been working on this since the 2003 cleanup and I have to say, we have some great stuff planned. Oh sure, we'll have the usual free t-shirt and hot dogs, but man, we've added so much more. Other volunteer organizations are going to be involved, along with several online Glamis-focused websites (like, oh, for instance, GLAMIS DUNES), and the ideas for making this the biggest and the best ever are awesome. Oh, and there's going to be a little healthy competition if we have our way with it.
And prizes? Just wait until you see what will be there!!!
We've also gotten a lot of good nuts and bolts suggestions on how to improve the cleanups... from keeping the raffle time short to adding a registration booth at the wash road. Keep those ideas coming.
There's a lot to be done behind the scenes right now, and as plans progress we'll post the updates. We really want to enhance the cleanup and find ways to attract more interest. Which of course means cleaner dunes and a chance for the public to see that we really are what's best for Glamis.
Anyone interested in joining the working group for the 2004 cleanup can contact me and I'll put you in the loop with the others. We can't do this without your help. Let's make this the happening that it should be!

Thanks Grant and you're so right!
Lots of late nights and working weekends in between, but it's a shining moment for the OHV community and worth the effort. I'm sure the ASA will have that corner booth again... how about the buggy scale?
Speaking of scales -- Specialty Scrap (well known throughout southern California) is donating a scale and some rolling bins. The bins, of course, will come in handy for the trash bags but the scale... well, remember that little competition I mentioned? Looks like we're on  (details to come).

School is keeping her from being too involved, but she's lending her expertise, advice, contacts, and support. She started this cleanup and has five years under her belt with it so we're happy to take any time she's able to give

Hot darn Congratulations DUNERS, get yoself some.
Ain't no better folks than dunin folks when joining together to take care of what they love da most, Mother G...OOHHH SLAPPY GOTTA DANCE.
Slap knows there are many people from the GD.com crew that can do wonders in sweepin Mother's ripples...Cruisin her dunes, washes, and roads picking up the trash sounds like a slapptacious good time with friends.
HMMM, a little competition??? Slap kinda dig playin like that. Maybe battle of da sites? DeepSand vs DUNERS vs ASA vs GlamisDunes vs Gotdunes vs ????DESERT USA????Do ya think they will show??? Bluesky???...Or maybe even a battle between Off-road organizations? Companies? UH OH, Slap be gettin the jitters just thinkin about it. Bringin Slap back to the days of lining up on the gate...30 second board sideways...
BBBRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAABRAAAAAAAAAAAAAABRRAAAAAAAA
You can register representing a site, off-road org or business and most trash bags gathered wins somethin slapptacious (of course braggin rights no doubt). Somethin like a Group Photo of the winners rrrrrrrrrrepresentin and postin it on each of the losing sites front page. Each site entered has to grant the winners front page exposure for a month or so. The ideas be endless. Slap would loooove to click on the ASA and see their front page say,
"The GlamisDunes.com website members WON the "TALKING TRASH" competition over the MLK Glamis Cleanup beating out DEEPSAND, gotdunes, DUNERS, ASA, and a host of others. That group was amazing in there speed, agility, stamina, and confidence in bagging trash." HMM, Slap likes the sound of that. ASA do have numbers and is strong, yet DEEPSAND is gathering...DESERTUSA? Could be fun...
CHUMMIN, no wearin the thong in the group photo  ...

Now that's what I'm talkin about!
We'll be throwing in some interesting competitors too (shhhhhhh it's a secret) so we'll all have to be on our toes
Slap, those are great ideas and you betcha we're going to talk to some of the environmental groups for their participation. DesertUSA is a great site, but I don't think they're really organized into a group (but we'll see if we can't get their participation in another way)... the Desert Protective Council on the other hand, would put up some pretty good competition and from what I've seen so far they're a great group of people (they participated in the south dunes cleanup last year). These guys really DO hike in the dunes so they're in pretty good shape  and may really give us a run for the money.
Sanduners is right... they were machines last year! Jim, we want to make things more "cleaner friendly" for the wash areas this year so we should talk.
Oh and Ride Red... I'm sure someone will find something for you to do to make up for having to work instead of clean :cheese:
We'll have the cleanup website up and running soon (got someone working on it right now) so we'll have a handy way to keep track of the ideas and volunteers and sponsors of course!
Anyone interested in getting together tomorrow night (Saturday), drop me an email. We'll fire up the blenders and formulate some plans :bounce:

I for one, wish DUNERs the best of luck and hope they are VERY successful in their endeavors! If they win, we all win.
There is PLENTY of tasks that need to be accomplished in this fight to save our sand riding areas and not enough volunteers for any one group to handle it all. If the members of DUNERs are happier working for that organization then the ASA, thats OK by me, as long as they are working with the goal of keeping the dunes open and not trying to compete with any other groups.
The ASA is very busy working on the legal and political issues involving our right to ride in the sand. The ASA has not had enough people to come forth and volunteer to cover everything.
I give DUNERs a lot of credit in taking on this extremely large event. It will take a lot of volunteers and time to make this event successful. If DUNERs can cover this event, it will leave the ASA with more resources to work on the important legal and political issues.
If DUNERs keeps going in this direction, working with other groups and not trying to compete, I will consider joining, and I would urge others to join as well. There is nothing wrong with being a member of many groups. I have joined ASA, SDORC, CORVA, BRC, Friends of Lake Powell, but I spend most of my money and time with the ASA as I want the dunes to remain open and I like work ASA does. (The ASA does a lot more than exhibited on this BBS, in fact this BBS really doesn't reflect the true nature of the ASA as an organization at all, it just reflects an individual's opinion that may be an ASA member, or not even an ASA member as the ASA allows non-members access to the BBS.)
I would like to urge all of us to give DUNERs the courtesy of trying to work together for the betterment of all.

Thank you AZSandrider, and to everyone for their support. Of course this is a wonderful event and if even half of what we've been scheming since January comes through it will be better than anyone can imagine!
But it's not the only thing DUNERS is about... like I said in one of the forums on the ASA message board:
Ooooops. I do have a personal agenda. Damn. And I think I've infected the rest of the DUNERS organization. So much for that.
We're not going to ever be satisfied with just keeping Glamis open. It can and should be so much more. The potential for making this a true world-class recreation area is incredible.
We have a wilderness area that's never been fully tapped. Hell, I don't have to ride over there, I'd love to WALK over there (or take a camel ride, right Jerry?), but there's no safe place to park... it needs some serious attention.
There used to be some great hunting in Imperial County... that hasn't been fully realized either.
And as for the dunes? We don't want people turned away because there's no room at the inn... instead, we want more camping spaces added, roads extended, better services offered.
The ISDRA can be to Yuma and Imperial what Disneyland is to Anaheim and Orange County.
That's what we want.
You can sit back and wait and see. Me? I've got things to do.
DUNERS is focusing on this cleanup of course, but our members are demanding much more and we're answering the call.
I also forgot to add that we're doing the things we're doing because so many Glamis lovers want it that way.
And we're listening

Absolutely!
One more month to go wooooo hoooooo
I forgot to mention before that cleanup volunteers need to email me if they're interested in camping with the rest of the cleanup volunteers (can someone say carne asada dinner?) so we know how many rigs to plan for.
Oh, and one other thing...
DUNERS has beanies and stickers and t-shirts and maybe even flags (by then), but we won't be selling them at the cleanup. Actually, none of the organizations will be selling anything this year. For one thing, the BLM really put their foot (feet?) down hard against it. We got an email from the BLM in September saying
| QUOTE |
| sponsors may display items but not sell anything in the ranger station area, If they want to sell items or memberships, they need to apply for a vendor permit and sell in a designated vendor area. |
We won't even be displaying anything... just passing out information on the organization and Glamis issues.
Besides... the cleanup committee that formed in May voted against it... they want the 7th Annual Glamis Cleanup to emphasize appreciation for the volunteers and working hard for the love of Glamis, and to leave fundraising for another day.
Oh, okay, one other thing... looks like our plans for a dunk tank have been scrapped

. We're not completely out of the running on it, but logistically it's proving to be too much of a problem. Keep your fingers crossed though... something may work out after all
