Full Version: Confused? Air Shock Vs Coil Over

i guess i don't understand why there is such a wide spread difference in the type of shock used by sand guy's? on some rails you'll see big buck coil over set-ups and then on the same type of cars the air shock without coils (looks strange holding up a big rail w/no springs) noticed alot more noise from the coil over type shock an seem's alot tuffer to change how the thing rides and sit's without having access to different coil's. but with the air shock (nitrogen) you can just change the air pressure and you'r done. noticed most all the monster trucks on speed run without coil springs, these are the trucks that really work well and the coil over stuff has a much harder time getting dialing in. peace.gif just thought i would ask?
PULLMEOUT
Two much different animals for sure. Coilovers are a little more time consuming to tune, but have a much more linear spring rate. Airshocks are lighter, less expensive(unless you buy a nitrogen tank) but have a spring rate that ramps up very quickly in the last few inches(good for a bumpstop). They heat up quite a bit faster too due to the smaller amount of oil they carry. For lightweight cars they are sufficient. Airshocks are very easy to tune with the addition or subtraction of oil and only takes a few minutes.

Both have their benefits for sure, but my next car will have airshock coilovers so I can take advantage of the bumpstop and tuneability and a bypass right next to it for the rest peace.gif

Again, JMHO.
