An example of a troll message in the newer sense would be one that denounces a particular religion in a religion newsgroup -- though historically, this would have been called "flamebait".

A variant of the second variety (inflammatory messages) involves posting content obviously severely contradictory to the focus of the group or forum- for example, posting cat meat recipes on a pet lovers forum, posting evolutionary theory on a creationist forum, or posting messages about how all dragons are evil in the USENET group alt.fan.dragons.

There is some generally-accepted wisdom about dealing with Internet trolls: "Don't feed the trolls, that will only encourage them." That is, do not respond to them, that is the attention they desire. Somebody who does respond to them is likely to hear "YHBT. HAND." from other members of the group, which means "You have been trolled. Have a nice day."

ya know

posting cat meat recipes on a cat lover's site would just be a dirty trick.

Posting content about the continuing controversy between ATV users and the general public is informative and a necessary topic of discussion in this age of overcrowding and selfishness.

the linked post contains important news for ATVers including the legality of "nail strips" used on trails that cross private property.

By choosing to ignore this post, you exercize your right to read what you want. By recommending that others not read it, you attempt to limit their ability to decide for themselves the relevance of this important content.

You can close your eyes to the truth. Will others allow you to close their eyes?

What Vicki is talking about are people who post just to get a reaction.

My particular issue is abuse of our natural landscapes by off-road vehicles.

I know that "vehicles don't impact nature--people impact nature" so I bring my opinions and quotes here to you folks who are the people who ride off-road vehicles.

As we post and argue and discuss back and forth we open channels of communication and we get to know one another's values and personalities.

I for one benefit when someone asks questions of me to clarify my position with facts or personal experience. I then spend time searching for the latest documentation to back up my posts.

The linked article is laced with over 50 links to websites and newsarticles and other forum posts that deal with the public's adverse reaction to the impacts of ATVs on the public and private lands of our country.

I post them here to let you know that I am not the only one dismayed by the insensitivity to nature and the rights of others too often displayed by ORV riders.

Vicki can try to play down the validity and seriousness of the anti-ATV movement. Do you think it is in your best interest to do so?

So denouncing OHV use on an OHV discussion board would tend to fall in this category? Am I close to understanding the point you are trying to make here, Vicki?

Could the argument also be made that BS is flaming? :cheese:
