All right...here's the deal with Pismo. Probably people get tired of posting it because the same question gets asked every couple of weeks.

If you're camping, there's a $6 per night fee, and reservations are required on the weekend. Otherwise there's a $4 daily use fee.

Camping is on soft sand along the beach. If you have 2WD, you will probably get stuck, especially if you're towing something. There are commissioned tow trucks that will pull you out for big bucks. If you are arriving on Friday night or Saturday morning, it can be difficult to find a good camping spot unless you have something highly mobile (like a 4x4 with no trailer), since most of the good camping areas are already taken. You'll probably have the opportunity to laugh at some dopes who get stuck up to the door sills in Honda Accords, Olds Cieras, etc.

There's a stream that crosses the beach that you'll have to cross. It varies from dry to a couple of feet deep, depending on the weather, tide, and season. It's best to plan to arrive at low tide.

Don't speed on the beach; limit is 15mph and the rangers do stop people who exceed it. Don't ride on the wet sand.

It's cold and wet at night. Tent camping there can be a miserable experience unless you know what to expect. Exposed metal will probably rust from the salt air.

There are port-a-potties in enough locations to make them pretty convenient.

The dunes themselves are small, and you can see all of Pismo in a few hours. but it's often easy to find good jumps if that's what you're into. Comp Hill is a complete and utter joke. Typically you'll find 17 year-olds racing daddy's F-150 up Comp Hill.

Now, even though my description seems kind of negative, it's not meant to. Pismo is fun, and there aren't many other choices in the Summer. I'll be out there weekend of 7/19.

biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Slappy, thanks for the input, I didn't think that a lot of people went to pismo anyway. Poiks, thanks for what you told us I'll keep it in mind.

Pismo is but a shadow of it's former self. But if you haven't been, it is still a unique experience. It will give you some insight as to where Glamis is headed as well. sad.gif
