just wondering how often i should have my bypass shocks and coilovers serviced or rebuilt ??? do you run them for a months, years? oh yeah i have an lt long travel.

Really depends on how hard you run them, how many you have on each corner, how big they are and how fresh you want them to be.

If you have over heated the shocks then they would need to be serviced immediately.

So lots of variables.

In race conditions it is every race.

For me it is not as much a factor of time as it is what terrain I have used the car on and how hard I have run it.

I've got ~2500 hard miles in Baja and Primm on my pre-runner and they are in need of a service. This is with a long travel, heavier 4-seat, that has 3.5 by-pass + 2.5 coil-overs on the rear with 3.0 by-pass and 2.5 coil-overs on the front. And for me this is 1 and 1/2 years of use.

The dunes are not going to be nearly as hard on the shocks as Baja or Barstow.

If I was just running the car in the dunes and went the ALL major holidays I would look to service every 2-3 years.

My 2-cents....

One problem I noticed on the king coil over shocks was the coils coming in contact with the shock body wearing down the rings and the threads. This was after 1 season. I tried to rotate the top spring to oppisite the bottom spring and still there was a arc to the springs.
Not sure if it was mine or others, I looked around and noticed tons of the longer coils out there were doing the same thing. So keep an eye on that.

I do agree that its a heat and use issue. I had the 3.0s and have had them so hot they would take the skin off your fingers and that was in the dunes. I dont know how to tell when they are to hot or not - but after a season or two of that, I would plan on rebuilding them for sure.

There are lots of quality shock builders that can repair and rebuild kings all over the place. But if your anywhere close to king I would highly recommend you send or take them over to them.

As long as no oil is coming out and the ride still seems to be where you want it, Id say run it for a couple a seasons. If is starts to feel sluggish or you start to see oil on the shocks - time to take them in.

BFS, When I did my 3.0s on my car, I lookes at all that was out there and cant recall ever seeing a 3.5 bypass. ???

im runnin kings 2.5 bypasses front and back and king coilvers 2.5 front and back i usually go out 3 times a month and recharge them after every 2 trips they just seem a little sluggish how much is it to rebuild them??

I have the Kings also and I recharge with nitrogen every 3-4 trips, about every 2 seasons I take all the shocks over to King and have them completly gone thru, new seals/oil ect.. The people at King are great and the customer service can't be beat.

I was just at King having my shocks looked at for my Allstar and was informed that you have increased you valving in the rear bypass shocks. How does your car feel after the change?

Quick lesson for Bret at King, bottom line Heat kills the shock so it all depends on driving style and if your Duning or Prerunning. The Dez is way harder on equipment. I had a Valving change, new pistons plus oil done on two Bypass for $80.00, that might have been a deal from all the racing stuff they have done for me in the past

Make sure to ask if the shocks have been charged with Nitro when King rebuilds them.I have heard of some shocks coming back empty.Easy to check......I personally have never had a problem, always great service from King..
