Its going to look sweet, I'm just waiting on the engine overhaul kit from Dr. ATV Gonna leave it stock bore with a mild cam and a K&N. Gonna order the white plastics and Michelle is going to find some fabric for a new seat cover.

I also designed a set of graphics for it as well and I will be designing a few other kits for the stock red plastics.

Pretty sweet!!

that looks good...why stock bars?
island chain racing
sick....looks good...how much did you pay for that front wheel and tire? i need one like that for my wifes bike
Bugsy
I bought the set of 3 on ebay for like 250 or so. I think they are from inland ATV.

Todd went with the stockers for now. I may chenge them up later on but I'm trying to keep the cost down for it...

Bugsy
here's a link to one of the auctions for the wheels and tires.... I would call them and see if you can order just one

I need a better job, GD.com pay well Bugsy?? laughing.gif
Bugsy
nope... no pay from gd.com

I think total I now have about 350.00 into it with out the plastics.

I paid 500 for it stock...

about 100.00 for the reuild kit,
about 150 for the wheels and tires
40.00 in bearings
30.00 in paint, body filler and primer. (the tank had the classic dents from the forks being jammed into the sides over and over)
fng2moto
Dude, I was just kidding about the yob.

It's gonna look way cool man. When you building yours? Next vacation?
Bugsy
maybe... im thinking about just leaving it alone... although I do have an 88 kit coming for it smile.gif I had fun building this one... maybe I will have to come up with a theme for mine too

Don't forget to repair the bump stops on the front part of the frame, or it will hit again.

My buddy Dave missed his when we rebuilt his wife's 70 and first time riding it her kid tagged the new tank.

It's looking great Bugsy, can't wait to see the finished product.

Mike at Inland ATV is the guy for the wheels, seems like a nice guy and I'm trying to get him interested in the forum thumb.gif
Bugsy
I made sure to take care of that! I need to find a way to re enforce it. so it doesn't happen again
Timmay
Looks really nice Bugsy thumb.gif

Had some more time to work on it today... Michelle helped me get the engine in and we got it running. It runs strong but has a bit of a bog when you punch it and also in the mid RPM's under load (me) I went to a 65 main as suggested by Dr ATV since i have the clamp on and the mild cam installed. any ideas? I'm thinking about going up a size on the pilot.

the engine is rebuilt to stock specs.

What do you guys think so far?

next is plastics, seat cover and hook up the break
treshombre
Very Nice !! thumb.gif

Now if you only knew someone whom could design some graphics for it.... icon_wink.gif

If your gaskets are all tight and your sure your timing is correct.
I'd bump a size on the pilot.

Bugsy
Thanks Tres, I am going to check my intake gaskets again then see if I can get a larger pilot jet.

Does anyone know where I can get a jet kit for these little carbs? I'd like to have a few sizes in both directions

I have spent many many hours searching local Honda dealers etc
and have come to the conclusion that DrAtv is the best and easiest source.

If you've got some time on your hands you can investigate http://www.sudco.com/

I am sure they have them..... somewhere
Bugsy
I will check with the Dr. I am also going to replace the points and condenser just to be sure.

Ok, I spoke to soon....

I don't think Dr Atv carries that slow jet.

It was the main jet I had so much trouble finding.

The slow jet is a N424-21 which was also used in the popular PWK carbs

It is 5mm in diameter and 28mm in length. most well stocked cycle centers should have them.

The next size up from your stock 38 would be a 40

so... Keihin N424-21 in a 40 should do the trick

79 south here in Temecula said they have 5 of them in stock.
Bugsy
THANK YOU SIR!

I will check with motoworld tonight for the slow jet. change that first and see what I get for results.

After that I will begin disassembling the flywheel side to check the points.

Do I have to replace the condnser? (i dont have a soldering kit and don't wnat to get one unless i really need it)

Bugsy
OK, just orederd the # 40 pilot jet from sudco. only crappy part is there is a minimum of 4 to order.

So I should have a couple extras if anyone needs em.

I know Madweazil has a bog off idle and Retodds bike did as well ( didn't have much time to resolve that before Christmas -New Years trip which is when we wanted to be able to give him the bike)

So I am sure those two would be likely to want one if it improves the situation.

I'm still leaning toward an air leak .....

ya let me know.....I would like to resolve the problem

I'd start with a gasket kit on yours Todd
I cleaned the carb thoroughly and added the fuel filters, replaced the points, condensor and set the timing.
Incidentally... I also replaced the stator, air filter assembly, and throttle assembly with parts I had on hand

so you should be covered on those things, carb rebuild kit will have the necessary parts.

Here is a link to the Sudco jets pdf for those looking for the slow jet...

Is your project almost completed? Would like to see the finished product.

Didn't have a chance to work on it last night icon_sad.gif

And it wont be completly done untill sometime next month since i really don't have the $$ to buy the new plastics right now.

OK, got my jets today, and they are not the correct jets for this carb. I will have to look up the carborator and find out which jets it should be. BUMMER. this is an 85 and the carb is slightly different then the one on my 82.... im thinking that they may be different...
funkyjunk
Sounds Like your putting a puzzle together.
Bugsy
it sucks... there are no well stocked honda dealers around here to bring the carb to and compare...

so i did a little research and found that the slow jet that belongs in the carb looks like this:
[attachmentid=129748]
424-22
but the ones I orderd look like this... I think i am off by a few numbers:
[attachmentid=129747]
424-21
Bugsy

Astars(old)
looking good bugsy. WHat color plastics you putting on?
70'sLifestyle
Are those tires Holeshots?
Is the front tire a different size than the rear? I like it!!
ISBB
Bugsy... call thumpertalk.com I stock 21 and 22 series pilot jets. icon_biggrin.gif
Bugsy
not sure the brand of fronts on the 70... i will have to check, tomorrow. they are all the same size... the rears are flat right now....

Its gonna have white plastics on it when its all done

I don't think so Bugsy

The 424-22 is 28 mm but it is 5.5 mm in diameter

The slow jet that is in the stock 70 carb is 28mm and 5mm in diameter

also check this picture:

[attachmentid=130980]

Against the pictures here:

http://www.sudco.com/cat32/132.pdf

notice the bell shaped end versus the straight end on the 424-22

I believe the 424-21 is the proper jet

Bugsy
well you are right and wrong too.... the 424-22 wass not the correct jet... but neither was the -21 when i tried it.

I've about had it now with chasing jets.... this sucks

the 21 did not even fit down the hole it was intended to. in the pic below of sudco's jet you can see that the threads are not counter sunk on the jet like the stock jets
[attachmentid=130980]
[attachmentid=131119]

Also , our carbs say PB on them? is that a model stamp?
Bugsy
any ideas on this tres?^^^^^^

On another note... sometimes you really just cant win...

As i was pulling the carb off and the intake to check the gaskets, i noticed that the threads where coming out of the head with the bolts!

DAMN IT!!!

So now i have worked backwards pulling the front tire, gas tank, exhaust and head off to drill out and re tap the holes with a coil repair kit! Fun stuff. I have the process down pretty well now and I think i can put it back together with my eyes closed.

I hate taking the forks off, the bearings are a pain to keep together. I've still got some carb work to do too, good luck with yours, I know I'll need it.
Bugsy
are you still using the loose ball bearings in yours pwr?

that's what I use......but I hold mine together use my waterproof grease....it's messy but it works well when putting back together

Yeah, I didn't see the races ones until after I ordered them from Jack. I do what Retodd says ^^ but taking them off twice and the grease sticks to the forks, but the bearings fall.

Good thing I have lot's of old towels laying around laugh1.gif
Bugsy
dued, get the new ones... they are so much better!
treshombre
Well crap ranting.gif

Guess I'm gonna have to email jack and get his opinion

need to talk with him anyway

I'll let you know
Bugsy
thanks im really getting frustrated now, what turned out as a relaxing project is now a PITA parts chasing wild goose chase
Bugsy
Had some time today to get the 70 just about done. Got the helicoils installed and the head back on, set the timing and got the seat mounted.

The only thing left is the plastics, but at this moment we are short on $$ so they can wait.

The seat was recovered by El Cajon Auto trim for 40.00! it came out great!

As far as my carb problem, I moved the needle clip down 2 notches to the bottom and it no longer has the bog off idle, but it seems that my mid to high rpms are a little flat. maybe up another size on the main? I'm just about lost now.

ol brown shoe
Bump the main jet up on size and you should have it. I know that with out the stock air box you're getting a lot more air. I have a 70 for the main jet in mine, but running 80cc. I know that back in the day you could not find any slow jets besides the stock 38.
Good luck. BTW your wheeler looks awesome. NICE!!
