I've heard and seen how well the 489 tires do in the sand, but how well do they do in the desert? I'm talking about the 4 ply variant. I recently switched over to a set of them, but now I'm concerned with how well they are going to hold up out in the desert. We mainly do our desert driving in Ocotillo Wells and Parker.
So who here has experience with these tires in the desert? Do they hold up, or should I start shopping for a second set of wheels/tires for the desert? I really would like to avoid spending the whole trip plugging tires
Thanks!

I have replaced one, and plugged two in the month or so that I have had them! They suck for desert riding!

they are complete crap. Stock ones are tougher than those...

Can't run the stockers I'm borrowing to get it in the truck since they don't belong to me. The wife is going to kill me when I tell her we need to buy another set of wheels/tires I better start searching for some used wheels and tires.
I think those are pretty cool looking and the price is right.
I would like them more if they were 25" tires. I want to stay away from buying 26" tires again.
I don't know if they would be that bad for crawling/desert running.Plus $450.00 isn't bad
You need the 25" 489's for the dunes

Not sure it's worth have a second set of wheels/tires just for the sand. Especially when we only make it out there a few times a year.

its a gamble, just like walking on a track and field course, while looking away from someone that is doing the 100 yard dash at full speed.
