Mr. Off-Road
This last week I had KMS Performance do adjust the valves and jetting on my Rhino, I picked it up on Tuesday and paid $183 for the services. I guess they charge $60 a hour for labor to work on the Rhino. In order to make it easier on them I removed my cage, seats, restraints and doors so all they had to do was tilt the bed and take off the engine cover.

Anyways, this weekend it didnt perform as well as I would have liked after a tune-up. It was backfiring quite a bit, probably just as much as it was before I dropped it off.

Is this a common issue to have after you get a rhino tuned up?

Im guesing you changed your fuel filter?
If so, does it do it at a higher RPM or when you let off the gas?
Check your header for cracks or if the nuts have came loose.

Thanks for the reply, great questions...

I had them change out my fuel filter on my Rhino while they were working on it. It does it whenever i left off the gas after being wide open (going up a hill or long straights). It doesnt do it non-stop but about 2-3 times on an 45 minute ride.

Where on the header should I look for cracks... where it mounts to the engine?

Sounds like a cracked header. Look at the header where it mounts to the head, at the base of the flange. I have had two crack on me. It also could be that your just a little lean on idle circuit as well.

What changes did he make? From what jet to what jet? For $50 you can buy about every jet for the rhino known to man form jetsrus. I would expect KMS to jet you using their dyno for that price with 02 sensor and gas temperature sensor and it should run like none other with like equipment of course.

I had decel backfiring and I installed a 50 pilot jet and bumped the mixture screw to 2.25. I love the way this thing runs now.

They cant put my Rhino on their dyno because of the Long Travel kit. I didnt ask what size jets they went up to, I figured that since they do this all the time it would be a no-brainer to tune.

My Rhino just has a CDI, KMS Sheave, Billet Exhaust Tip, K&N Filter with Billet Adaptor, Mikuni hi-flow fuel pump and thats it. Oh and I always run premium fuel. I will have to check for that header crack... hopefully I could see in there without taking the Rhino apart, again wacko.gif

Possible also -
- Carb may have slipped off the rubber boot letting air in
- Fuel return line from Y-fitting behind pass seat is not pointing down (its the one that goes back to the tank) therefore starving the carb

Check your plug color. White, scaly, light grey = too lean

Micheal, Mine was blowing fire when it backfired, I rejetted down 2 jets and no more backfiring, I would check to make sure all the connections are tight on the boots, check your exhaust for cracks, if it still does it, rejet it.

Funny, my carb came off in the middle of the dunes and was a nogo until we found the loose boot this weekend.

My preference is to have the return at the Y fitting point up to keep the pump primed.

My headers look clean, unless I am taking pics of the wrong area where they crack... there is one that looks like weird but I dont think its a crack,... if it was a crack wouldnt there be black exhaust residue around the crack?

Beerp.gif sounds like they f----d up the jetting - the needle may not be in all the way or just plain wrong jets to start with ( or needle position) - take it back to them and give them a chance to fix it or if you dont want to deal with them every yamaha SxS dealer is supposed to have an exhaust gas analyser to tune your jetting. good luck!!! Beerp.gif

BTW - your header looks fine from here....

That's what mine is doing as well. i beleive it's excess fuel not being burned and in turn it's burping through the exhaust. im still playing with it for now.

Mr O., Go get your self a big fat 50 pilot jet. Actually I have a 47.5 I can let you try this weekend, oh wait your going to a wedding instead of the crash.
