The 400ex and the Z/KFX have already proven themselves to be great bikes. Whats your budget looking like? You can score a clean 400ex out of the trader for around 4 grand or you can step it up a knotch and get a brand new Z/KFX for around $5,500 OTD from your local dealer. I'd give the YZF 450 a year or so to work out the kinks and also let the dealers start competing over price a little more. From the looks of things this bike isn't selling as well as the dealers thought it would. Most dealers have 5 or 6 of these sitting on the floor.

I'd try and find a nice used 250R or 400ex for 3 to 4g's and then sue the money you would have saved on buying the Z/KXF an dget some mods

my budget is around $4500-5500. i have been looking around some and found quinsey powersports in lemon grove has 400ex's for $4999. corona motorsports has the kfx for that same price. ive been on the 400ex multiple times and it is a great bike, but its air cooled and ive gotten it hot a few times. the z/kfx is watercooled, so no problems with heat.
a buddy at work has a z400 and he swears by it. as for a banshee...yea, id rather be riding it than working on it. besides i prefer thumpers over oil burners.

elky man....if you are considering buying new, and the prices you were given are not "out the door", it may be worth the drive to lacyclesports. You can get a 400 ex out the door for about 4900 and the z400 for about 5800 according to the prices they sent me last week.
Between those two choices, I'd spend the extra $900 and go with the z400. It's a good "all around" bike, and if this is an issue, will fit many different riders.
good luck in the hunt..

I would definately recomend the Z400, Its an awesome little all around bike. Does great out in the sand even without paddles.

The z kicks the crap out of the 400ex for near the same price point.
The Z all the way

Yup, If speed is not an issue and you need reverse buy the Z.
Otherwise I'd get the Predator ..... that is if you like to go fast.

Predator falls out of this guys quoted price range, otherwise I'd say run the yfz450, that's supposed to kick the crap out of the predator

ive been checking some stuff out on the predator, and it looks like it could be a possibility for me too. the only thing im not quite sure about is its styling, kinda strange. but the specs on it look good, too me anyway.

6'5 and 280 = Bombardier DS 650. That quad will fit you the best and have plenty of power.

ATV Sport's shootout did not include the 450 (yes I know because it is brand new) so take that into consideration, and it would have helped if they posted the times they used (if they did I missed it.)
Hmm, I looked at the atv connection forums and could not find this, which forum are we talking about?
Also, I've been in Sunwest more than a few times, they never had them in stock, so call b4 you go.

I'm sure there is stuff under the Polaris Forum but here are a couple of honest threads on the subject..... ( not atvconnection though )

alright,
i went to the local polaris dealer here in esondido and checked out the predator. all i have to say is that im not even considering the honda anymore. the z/kfx may still be a possibility due to price, but i want the predator. that thing is baaaad. its got balls, suspension and it seems to fit my size and build better.
now all i need to know is where is the best place to buy one? here at north county yamaha-polaris, they are off their nut. way too much. someone was saying that they scored one at sunwest. $5800 out the door? shiat.

dont waste your money on a 400ex, especially if you have 5500 bucks, you can get a z400 or kfx or even predator. I hear mostly good things about the z400 and kfx over anyother bike. I rode a z400 and it ran great with a pipe, lots of fun. Although I do prefer a raptor over all other 4 strokes, because it just feels more like a mans bike. I know you say you say you dont want a banshee cause you want to ride and not work on it, but banshee's are good bikes, just maintane it, mine is ported and has a bunch performance stuff, i feel its just as reliable as my dads raptor, and i will smoke the crap out of these tractor 4 strokes, so banshee all the way!!
But whatever you do dont get a 400ex, check out the z400 or kfx(supposed to be the best bike for your buck on the new 4 strokes.) , if you have to have a 4stroke.

i have been checking around at prices and i found some info at atvprice.com. the invoice for the kfx400 is $4892 plus about 150 for freight and assembly. total ready to sell is $4944 with a list of $5699. the predators invoice is $5279 plus about 80 for assembly with a total ready to sell at $5320. list is $5999. looks like some of these dealers are looking to get a LOT of profit considering they like to add other figures as well. now with this info, maybe i can get a good deal.

I'd have to say its pretty reliable. The only things that have broken on my quad are things I broke on my own or was at fault at. People have complained about the brakes and notchy tranny. The brakes dont effect my riding, and the notchy tranny goes away a bit over time but I think it has a lot to do with the type of oil they reccomend as I use 10w40 and have not had a problem with it.

hey elky...found out lacyclesports also sells the polaris's. Looks like their otd price is about 5995. Seems like a decent deal, as if you take your posted invoice price of 5279 plus tax of 435.52, license of 21, doc fees of 45, and your assembly cost of 80, you get a total of 5860.52. So the dealer would make $140 off the sale. Looks like they are making about $275 off of the Z400's at their otd price of 5790. I wonder if polaris has some sort of a kickback deal that's not included in those invoice numbers.
Anyway..have fun..

beachhead,
yea, i have the paper with the prices in front of me and polaris has a 5% holdback for the dealers. also right now dealers can get some extra money from polaris if they sell a certain amount or more. kawi has something like it, but a dealer gets more on a polaris.
im pretty sure im going to get the predator, i just want to see if anyone has been having problems with them.

I just bought my 04 Raptor otd for $6100 cash. I'm your size, 6'3'' 250 lbs. It's going to pismo for the first ride in a couple of weeks but I'm sure that it will be fine.
I thought about buying all the bikes your talking about. I've seen some very fast raptors at old. I never seen any z400 or predators get even close to beating them. That's what made up my mind.
