Not much beats letting the bikes cool off and enjoying an Ice Cold Delicious Beverage in the dunes while appreciating the view of Old Glory on the horizon. Before social media, the mass use of GPS navigation and destination rides were uncommon, the flag pole was a frequent stop for our GlamisDunes.com riding group that hailed from Wash 13.5. A flag pole had been placed on one of the metal boxes in memoriam of Chuck Boardman by the Boyz Ride around the year 2000. By 2003 the flag had become weathered and in need of replacement... a spark was ignited and a concept formed for the first "gathering" to replace the flag, recognize our veterans, and celebrate our freedoms. …

The business end of it: The mission of Glamis Veterans is to celebrate our freedoms and to always remember, honor, and support our military veterans for their sacrifice to our country. Glamis Veterans is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a meaningful ceremony at the Flag Pole in Glamis every year. Glamis Veterans are patriotic off-roaders who support our military, the freedoms we enjoy, and the stewardship of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area. You do not need to be a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces to be a Glamis Veteran. A love for our country, appreciation for our military veterans, and a desire to maintain the sport that we enjoy …

From The Challenge Coin Depending on who you ask, the “challenge coin” has historical roots dating back from nearly one-hundred years to as early as the Roman Empire. The most common narrative purports that a wealthy American lieutenant in World War I distributed matching bronze coins to his unit members before they were deployed. A fighter pilot from his unit was shot down and forced to land in hostile German territory. The pilot was subsequently captured and temporarily held in a detention facility that was later attacked by British Forces. This attack afforded the American an opportunity to later escape. At some point after his escape, and without many of his…

I think it's fair to say that most all of us enjoy sharing Glamis with others - introducing them to the dunes and the sport/area that we love. There's something therapeutic about a good ride and a campfire surrounded by like minded people, friends, and family. Glamis Veterans is standing up a new program this weekend, hosting veterans and their families at Glamis for a dune therapy session. Group meals, campfire, guided rides, a responsible introduction to the dunes and our sport. We'll be covering all costs for the veterans and their families - RV rental, food, even the fuel to/from their home to the dunes. The goal is to have ~2 each year and after this weekend'…

As we grow the non-profit and our mission, one of the missions that we are undertaking is to host veterans and their families in the dunes and cover their associated costs. Dune Therapy Sessions for veterans and their families. This part of our program would run twice a year (not Veterans Day weekend) while also facilitating large efforts on the Veterans Day weekend in partnership with other veterans organizations. We are working with industry partners on off weekends that are helping make this happen in a big way. They'll need to bring clothes, bedding, and toiletries. Everything else is hosted. There is a nominal fee up front to ensure some skin in the game and les…

I realize this is last min, but any chance you guys can pick a channel and broadcast the ceremony? I know a lot of people have radios and would be awesome to hear the whole event from the top of every dune.

My son (@j.nuibe.photography on IG) had an idea to take a timelapse of the arrival of the crowd at the ceremony this year. We got there early and setup far enugh away to get most of the people in the shot. We could have started it a bit earlier, but wanted to get the busiest time, with most people arriving. As it is, this was shot over 1 hour and 25 minutes and is made up of over 5,000 individual photos. If you've got the monitor for it, this will play in full 4K resolution.

Since the beginning camp was always a big part of the event. While the ceremony takes place out at the flag pole there were things going on back at camp all weekend long, from wash 13 to the compound, to wash 22. Bounce houses, pot lucks, DJs, crafts and activities for the kiddos, etc. We've had some incredible times over the years on Veterans Day weekend! Last year Rob graciously handed back the event and we formed the Glamis Veterans non-profit. Part of the goal is to grow the services and engagement, working on hosting an adrenaline therapy session for veterans later this season and other activities... at any rate, in an effort to reach more people and make it mor…

I really would like to attend this November. However, I've sold all my ATVs and my Funco. I can be there, and if offered a ride to the flag pole, that would be "Most Excellent". Anyway, let me know if this doable. Thanks in advance..
