Im interested in getting an Elliptical, but have never used one.  Does anyone here use one regularly?  what are the Do's & Dont's?

What is the advantage to the ones with the moving hand bars?

Is there a brand to get or stay away from?  My old boss has a Precor & says that its a solid machine & had has a ton of miles on it.

any suggestions on where to find a good quality used one?  (does anyone have one for sale?).

thanks

Bob

joking aside. It never gets used. My buddy got a pelaton and its been visibly beneficial for him

Due to a back injury, running/jogging outside or on a treadmill hurts me. I ended up buying a used precor elliptical and have also put a ton of miles on it. I used it quite often till I sold my house. Now I use the gym machines. The only brand I know well is precor and yes, they make solid gym quality machines. Models with arm bars just allow you to work your arms along with your legs. The cardio benefit is the same, but the muscles in your arms, back, and shoulders will/won't get worked. Look for a model with a heart monitor. The kind I used was a band that you wore against the skin around the chest. A sensor on the machine reads and displays your heart rate. I like keeping my heart rate above and below certain points. There is a graph on the machine face that shows where you want your heart rate at for your age. It's a rough suggestion but that worked for me so I would keep my heart rate between 140-150. I lose weight then gain it back so the elliptical was beneficial for me and that machine and a dumbell set made working out during the pandemic easy.

depending on your budget try to find a used one from a gym. they are much better, last longer, and sturdier than the little home ones. but they are also bigger so take that in account when looking. i got super lucky and found one for $400 at the begging of covid. my gym had a couple for sale they were asking $1000. precore is a good one that most gyms have. as for the one with the arms handles that move that is just preference.   facebook market place, CL, all the resale sites, might be able to get one since gyms are open again people might be trying to get rid of the stuff the bought and probably rarely used. dont think its worth it to by new.

We bought a Nordictrack Elite 14.9i - retails for $2500 for $600 on OfferUp and it was BRAND NEW.

Elite 14.9 Elliptical

My wife LOVES it, it was the best one we could find for the cheapest price. If you get one, get a good one cause the cheapo ones suck and you'll use them even less.

thanks for the input folks.  I used to ride my stationary bike every morning, but it just kept getting less & less comfortable.  with me its not the age, its the mileage.

Other than Precore & Nordictrack any other suggestions on quality machines?

thanks again

Bob

I had a NordicTrack elliptical for 20 yrs and used it regularly for most of that time. It was big and heavy which is why it held up well over the years.

The reasons why I bought it was my knees were trashed and running was not an option. Needed low impact and the elliptical filled the bill. I also worked long hours and didn't have the time to go to the gym.

Used it up until a couple yrs ago when I no longer could use it. Gave it to my oldest daughter and I'm pretty sure there are clothes hanging from it now.
