Figure Me This, Broken tube.

Recommended Posts

Last weekend while out running dunes I noticed my steering wheel/ dash seem to have movement in them. I thought maybe a weld let loose and no big deal. While not a major deal I don't understand what happened. The tube is broken right under, around where the dash aluminum is cut out to fit. Both ends are the same and what really gets me is 1" outside of the break is an old hole for wiring no longer used and not filled in. I would have at least thought it would have broken from the old holes. What are the opinions, some kind of harmonic vibration? I don't get it for sure.

Stress riser which started at the toe of that weld.

The hole for the wiring should not start a crack.

Well it did crack on the edge of the tab on both sides. The tab supports the dash and could be flexing some and help cause it I suppose.

Frame twist, gotta flex somewhere, I would weld it up and add some 1" quad catchers (v of tubing) centered in  the windshield, or a tube down to the floor from the dash to beef it up a little. I am a big fan of Little triangle gussets at the top of the windshield also for left or right stress movement. 1" tubing works good.

360, both sides and could have been going on for a while and reached breaking point this last weekend. Yes, that and the sand was beat as bad as I've ever seen.

It is damn rough in the wet sand. Going to be a while before things dry out. Get out the welder!

Just got a new spool of wire and bottle of gas.

Welded it and the wrapped a tube around out side (external sleeve). All inside of dash.

On a side note, I did shear a spindle this last weekend. That was fun!

Yea, no pic's. Thought about it but decided no. Yes removed front shock, tied it up and drove it back, into the trailer and out at home. It was right side so would drive with me in it. Mid engine with the added weight forwards can be dicey, specially if left wheel comes off. Then you must sit in passenger seat and drive or front is too low.

It's horrible and had been horrible.  The sand has stayed wet this year and very little wind to actually groom it.

Definitely the worst I have seen it in the last 20 years.

That corner brace is a dead node. Need something to back up the other side or it’s probably gonna crack again.

Did you check the other side?

What brace?

I think what your calling a brace is a tab, for the dash, not sure.

All metal can crack. The pictures show a nice crack but without seeing more of the frame structure, there's no way to tell how its moving and what if anything could be added.

My gut feeling is, and after wheres hotboat pointed out, that the toe of weld caused the weak area. There is some leverage of twist motion due to steering bearing and shaft. Given my hand, arms on the wheel are usually hanging on for dear life on most rides won't help.  When I said both sides broke I meant both ends of the tube next to a pillars. Made it 10 years and now with repair it's stronger.

Thanks for all your reply's feeling better about it, besides it's too late now as it's done and gonna run what I brung.

Maybe you could post a better picture showing the tab and bar.

Not now, maybe next time if there is one. I hope there isn't. Car is done and together and repaired area is inside dash. I even got the spindles done today.
