Panel rattles

Recommended Posts

Looking for ideas on how to deaden the rattle of my body panels. I was thinking thin weatherstripping on the tubing? Anyone have a better idea?

I brought my panels to an upholstery shop, and they lined them with vinyl with a layer of thin  foam sandwiched in between. They terminated the vinyl behind the tubes. Pretty much eliminated the squeaks, & rattles.. Didn't cost that much, and made them look a lot nicer also.

Exactly like you said. I used this from Home depot. Comes double wide you can separate for single. I just stick it on the tube and then put the panels on works awesome. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Frost-King-E-O-3-8-in-x-17-ft-White-Ribbed-EPDM-Cellular-Rubber-Weather-Seal-Tape-V23WA/100145681

That's exactly what I used/did and worked great. Rattles be gone.

What Alper said.  Use something like this: https://www.metrorestyling.com/Metro-Carbon-Fiber-Upholstery-Fabric-Vinyl-p/blkcffabric.htm, then attach it with a GOOD spray adhesive like "3M Hi-Strength 90 contact adhesive".  I used a "Permatex heavy duty headliner and carpet" last time, it all peeled off.

I never was bothered by the rattle when driving but I put a sub woofer in 2 seasons ago and the rattle drove me nuts. I used a dynamat knock off on all aluminum panels that got rid of it completely. Made the stereo sound much better!

budlight is correct you really need the 3M 90  my issue was that the price of the 3M 90 was more expensive then the upholstery shop to do the full job, so I dropped my panels off and they where all done it has been 10 years and I still prep the car and it has been sold twice, panels still have the carbon fiber wrap like day one,

if you pay people to do what they do they will pay you to do what you do,   something said for a good trades men,

I used Speaker Cabinet Carpet and 3M spray adhesive. Works like a charm. And no it didn't have any sand stick to it.

I’m old and wear a helmet. No rattles for me.

But my panels are also covered with vinyl material.

some auto or marine vinyl and use this glue to secure it  https://www.amazon.com/Dap-Weldwood-Contact-Adhesive-Solvent/dp/B004IH3HAQ

this is what most auto upholstery shops use.

Pretty much what I used.  No more rattles from that panel (never got to them all).  There is still some drumming from it, but not a problem once you get to speed since the engine, wind and paddles make most of the noise.   If the panel is attached well, shouldn't ever come off.
