Complete tear down and makeover on my car

Recommended Posts

My car came with a turning brake and I've never been able to use it because my Jettrim seats are too wide for where it was mounted.  Now is the time to remedy that.

The previous owner had made a plate out of 3/16" diamond plate, flipped it over and drilled the holes to make a mount for the Albins shifter and turning brake.  I know for a fact that it went to powder coat but I can't find it.  I'm 100% positive I had it in my chubby hands at some point but I've torn my shop apart and can't find it anywhere.

I used a scrap piece of 3/16" aluminum for the new mount.

Because my Albins is an H pattern the turning brake handle isn't going to work here.

I had another handle and tried it but when I'm belted in the car I can't reach it very well.  So I chopped it up.

Now the turning brake is usable.   But I'm not a fan of chrome so I removed it and took it to my buddies house to put into his DIY powder coating set up.

I also took the throttle cable mount and radiator over-flow bottle.

Looking good! Gotta chop my turn brake handle also,  I knocked the car out of second gear a couple times last year trying to be a hotshot and use the turn brake being a goof

Jeff  You are reminding me of just how much work it is to tear down and properly put a buggy back together. Should be solid and trouble free for awhile though.

OK I'm going to be the bad guy here and point out what I think will not work.  This piece of 3/16 aluminum that you have the turning brake bolted to will fold down from the force you will apply  when you pull the handle back.  And then want to go the opposite way when you push forward.  There is no support under the far left rear corner to keep the plate from wanting to fold down and pull up.  This is just my .02 worth Jeff so don't flame me to bad.  And Jeff surely you are going to replace the rusty bolt holding that pretty shifter on RIGHT :1cheff:Keep the pictures coming you are doing a stand up job, tearing down and totally rebuilding a car is no child's play.  And I was just kidding about the bolt. :headbang:

I’ve ridden in friends Funcos that are fast drivers don’t get me wrong it’s fun and all but alright already enough with the sliding. I can slide my car on a turn also with the throttle maybe not as efficient or as fast as a Funco with turn brakes but it’s enough for me. I do a lot of hard pack dez with my car also so it’s a big dual sport car that I can throw everything at it for me.

Came out nice!   I'm about to do the same to a buddies car.  His sparco seat's won't allow him to use the brake.  I did a similar platform on mine a few years ago.  I have a bit more overhang so I used 3/16" 4130.  No problems so far...the chromo does flex a little though.

If I ever own a car with a wing I'll kick my own ass.

I agree. The plan was to start doing more Barstow and Ocotillo trips but that'll have to wait till after this Glamis season is over.

You should for sure man!  Tell him who you are and that you did the design for my car.  Bet he offers you some side work... Mike's new shop is badass!  He really planned it out and made an awesome work space for his employees.  His upstairs office is effing sweet too!   180* view from floor to ceiling windows on the second floor, full bathroom w/shower.  If that were my office I'd never go home.
